Mariah Carey - Fantasy - 27-May-07 08:46 PM
"Fantasy" is Classic Mariah from the Golden Age of her career in the Mid-90s. The album version is an extremely slick slice of RnB, it was everywhere at the time - that Autumn it came out you couldn't get away from it. The release also features several David Morales remixes. The Def Club Mix never really grabbed me - perhaps it's overblown length or the fact it never really seems to settle into it's own groove. I'm not sure. The Sweet Dub Mix, on the other hand, is sublime. Carey sounds like a disco diva for the 90s on this, her vocals sensual and uplifting. It's also perhaps the finest piece of Deep House that Morales has ever produced. Find it somehow. If you like Deep House you NEED this.

David Morales & Frankie Knuckles - United DJs Of The World Volume 1 - 19-Feb-07 07:05 PM
I'm a huge fan of both David Morales and Frankie Knuckles, so eagerly purchased this the other month. However, I have to say that it's a real dissapointment.

The David Morales mix in particular is very weak. Some of the track selections are questionable (The inclusion of the Morales-produced "Congo" - a mediocre track - seems especially self-indulgent) and for me, the mix never really gets off the ground. There is too much of a focus on choopy-beat mixing and it definatley sounds like Progressive House gone bad.

Fairing better is the Frankie Knuckles mix. The track selections are far stronger here, I especially love The Secret Life record "Love So Strong", and also the Deep Dish-remixed "The Dream". This is a much less ragged, more enjoyable mix, full of deep, danceable house grooves.

Overall, this wasn't the essential release I thought it would be. I don't know why it doesn't work - but something is definatley off. Some of the weak track selections are to blame IMO, and some of the mixing isn't the best.

Dissapointing, especially considering Morales and Knuckles' usually outstanding output and thier steller reputation.

Janet Jackson - That's The Way Love Goes - 18-Feb-07 01:38 PM
Stunning Deep House from CJ Mackintosh here. The Jackson vocal is rather incidental, although it does work quite well with the overall vibe of the track. However, the Instrumental Dub is without doubt the superior version here - a beautiful deep house groove. A classic in it's own right.

Bassline Road - You Will Find It - 24-Sep-06 08:23 AM
Excellent underground Deep House. Lovely warm sounds on all versions, with the "Solar Drums Mix" being probably the best of all three with a nice Progressive edge. An awesome little record that will be tricky to find but well worth it if you do.

Red Melon Records - 04-Jul-06 04:46 AM
A fabulous, truly underground label, Red Melon has got to be one of my very favourite labels around. Specialising in dubby, techy Deep House these guys have put out some amazing work. No radio friendly edits here, this label is STRICTLY FOR THE CLUBS and that's the secret to it's continued success.

The Red Melon sound can be occasionally self-indulgent and overblown, but that's rarely the case. They usually get it right, and when it's right it's perfect. Key tracks for me include - "Toons (Terry Lee Brown Jr. Mix)"; "19ยข Trumpet (Dano's Melon Dub)"; "Show U Love (Dano's Show U Dub)" and "Transit" but there are many, many more.

Getting Red Melon sounds used to be like getting a needle from a fuck-off huge haystack. Now, with the oustanding "Red Melon Export" series, available on CD and (best of all) on iTunes, there really is no excuse not to inject some Melon into your life if you're a real House Head. Go buy the ''Export'' albums already!
