Larry Levan - The Definitive Salsoul Mixes '78-'83 - 03-Oct-09 04:41 PM
Larry Levan The Definitive Salsoul Mixes’78-‘83

If you really want to begin to understand what all the fuss is about, when it comes to the names Larry Levan, Salsoul, and the Paradise Garage, then look no further than this compilation…
In a world where everyone’s an expert, this comprehensive double cd selection of mixes and productions, by the original DJ superstar / remixer, will leave you nothing short of being one yourself, and is a must for any Salsoul lover.
The names Jocelyn Brown, The Salsoul Orchestra, First Choice, Loleatta Holloway, Aurra, Leroy Burgess, Steve Arrington, The Jimmy Castor Bunch, and Instant Funk might ring bells, but listen to this, and them bells gonna rock.

Larry Levan mixed it all up at the Paradise Garage from 1977 until 1987 – and seeing as this edition only covers 1978-1983, youll do well to scope out anything else that bears his name!

Hats off to the man from del-sussd

Joey Negro / Miguel Migs / Gilles Peterson - Southport Weekender - 03-Oct-09 04:31 PM
Various Artists Southport Weekender (House & Jazz – UKCD(x3 +bonus.DVD)-suSU)

Never mind the Pontin’s….Several thousand people sharing an April or November weekend together, up in the not-too-temperate North-West of England , Getting down to anything that’s got that something…. I can’t remember which number Southport it was (they’re now up to #33), but there he was on stage, 70’s Soul legend Ron Banks, from the Dramatics…forgetting a few lyrics to some of his old hits…And finding himself being helped out by hundreds of absolutely devoted soul fans, who knew every one of the songs, word for word – What an amazing joint performance, and certainly a Southport moment.
Moving on a year or two…
The triple pack ‘Southport Weekender’ is a bit of a moment in itself, with quality up-to-the-then-minute House mixes provided by Joey Negro, and Miguel Migs, and a Jazzroom-classics selection from the very Worldwide Gilles Peterson - altogether totalling over 4 hours of weekender vibes, new & old.
There’s also a bonus DVD generously thrown in, which I do wish was a bit longer, ‘cause it does give you a good idea of how special this event is to so many people, who’ve all got their own Southport moments!
Maybe future volumes might include original soul selections from Bob Jones, Gary Dennis & Richard Searling, or a Westwood classics disc, or Louie Vega and Kenny Dope rockin’ down the house set , or…well, the list could go on, there’s been that much talent in one holiday camp!

Buy the album, book the chalet!!

Gilles Peterson - Worldwide Programme 3 - 03-Oct-09 04:22 PM
Various Artists Gilles Peterson – Worldwide 3 (All styles! UKCD/DBLLP - Talkin Loud)
Worldwide for real, Gilles Peterson’s weekly show broadcasts direct to 10, count ‘em, ten different countries around the globe, and here is the 3rd selection in the series, of what the good people of this planet have been treated to at that particular moment in quality dancefloor history….
The Detroit Experiment’s ‘Space Odyssey’, Terri Walker’s ‘Guess You Didn’t Love Me’, Henri Mancini’s truly sublime ‘Butterfly’, James Brown’s newly latinized ‘Give It Up Or Turn It Loose’, Marvin Gayes’ seminal 2 step classic ‘Heavy Love Affair’, DJ Gregory’s huge summer anthem ‘Elle’, and Raphael Saadiq’s dreamlike ‘Skyy, Can You Feel Me?.And that’s only half of this incredible set. Not just the odd musical highlight, but the whole damn chandelier!

Madlib - Shades Of Blue - 03-Oct-09 04:19 PM
MadLib Shades Of Blue / MadLib Invades Blue Note (Jazz / Hip Hop –UKLP/CD)

A major Blue Note remix project of this kind would have been unthinkable not too long ago, but keys were handed over, and vaults unlocked…
Artists such as Donald Byrd, Gene Harris, Ronnie Foster, Bobbi Humphries, and Horace Silver have gotten taken back to the streets; courtesy of LA’s most prolific, MadLib.
What’s here is essentially a 16 track Hip Hop / jazz fused introduction to a whole new audience, who might not know just how musically important the Blue Note label is.
Reimagining, remixing and rebuilding these timeless classics to such a high standard deserves awards, and definitely gets my vote – A heavy piece.
