Tony McPhee - The Two Sides Of Tony (T.S.) McPhee - 10-Sep-09 02:05 PM
Techno before techno, this is a very obscure record from the Groundhogs front man. The a-side being very straight Blues Rock, with next level lyrics of a political slant. The flip however is an oddball, brilliant slice of experimental synth music based around the hunts which used to occur throughout the Home Counties in the UK until they were outlawed recently.
Sounding almost like Drexciya, Rob Hood and early Asmus Tietchens on Sky all in the studio programming Arps together, with Tonys voice over the top. There are some moments of genius on here, or i wouldnt have referenced the earlier artists. The 4/4 section of The Hunt is especially prophetic, proto-techno for sure. There are also moments that sound completely dated, and pretty bad, but are overshadowed by the naive genius of Mcphee.
Its a good example of experimental electronics from the 70s, found in an unlikely place, with a good political stance and a great custom sleeve.

Newworldaquarium - The Dead Bears - 10-Jul-08 10:08 AM
An outstanding album. Regarding the comment of nothing much happens in some of the tracks, hmm, thats what we call groove mate, you get a good loop and you roll with it. Subtlety is one of my favourite nuances of music, and thats inherent in this album. Lush, deep, rolling and endless, you really dont want some of these tracks to end.
There are a lot of deep producers around at the moment, and its becoming the norm to have lush reverbs, long dubby delays and other trademark signs of deep techno/house, but groove is something very few producers have a knack of capturing.
Want to know what i mean?? Buy the damn album!
I love this album, and with 18 years of hearing this sort of music that saying a lot, as for the production, this record could have been released 15 years ago in that respect, its not dated, more like timeless.

Drexciya - Drexciya 4 - The Unknown Aquazone - Double Aquapak ... - 28-May-08 06:27 AM
Classic, absolute classic material here. Take Your Mind is a brilliant spazz funk electro track, Living On The Edge is also a killer cut and a dark insight to the psyche of Detroit machine music, but hit Lardossen Funk for the epitome of Drexciyan groove. Wigged out basslines and spannered synths rise and rise to deliver a real catchy hook, and itll stick in your head for ever. Drexciya have a knack of encompassing the 80s, 90s as well as the future in their productions, this doublepack is not only early material for them, but has in its grooves all that Drexciya strived to put into their music and philosophy. Unmissable for any self-respecting machine funk specialist.

Mike Huckaby - My Life With The Wave (Limited Edition Set) - 18-Apr-08 01:36 PM
An amazing package here from the criminally overlooked Mike Huckaby.
The tunes themselves are awesome, the a-side alone is a seriously deep and cavernous track, filtered pads alongside solid kicks combined with a lush bassline make a sick groove, with added delays creating depth in spades. The flips head in a deep house direction with more melody and keys and showing the versatility of both producer and instrument.
Rest assured its now permanently entrenched in my classic play pile.
The sample CD is also superbly crafted and packaged, with an introductory narrated video and the samples themselves organized into folders for ease of use.
Being a Waldorf user too, i can hear the depth of programming hes put into the sounds, and the time well spent learning the massive potential of the Wave.
Any budding producer of deep music would do well to obtain this release, for both the music and the samples.
Huckaby has always been the man to watch for those who have good ears, and here he delivers some of his trade secrets of deep synthesis.

Automation - 6 Track EP - 15-Jan-08 10:19 AM
Damn, if one record out of bloated classics of hardcore needs a review its this one. OK, the remix 12" is good, but this was the record that was hammered by many a ardcore kid back in the day.

3 tracks off the a-side were on the infamous DJ Hype tape from Fantasy FM, known throughout the North West as Hype 2. The tape, and consequently this record had a huge impact on the club scene up North, i blagged my first copy of this from Marcus Intalex (the real DJ of the Angels in Burnley).

Each track is based around various samples, very early use of the Amen and various other funk breaks, and some killer stabs and chords (think Psychotropics Only For The Headstrong).

The record came out at a time when Hardcore was still being born, and naivety was a plus, and I think of the amount of times I heard tracks from this 12" proves what an impact it had on the genre.
A Killer record, and a great example of the good records that were hammered back then. Not the crap ones sold for fortunes now!
