Eddie Holman - I Love You / I Surrender
Dec 01, 2009
Gaiee

06 Nov 2009 - I own a copy of GAE 101 Valentino [UK E.M.I. pressing], and I was aware back in 1975 that Gaiee Records was part of Tamla Motown UK, distributed by E.M.I., now Motown Group.
I tried to add this label to Motown as a sub label, but could not get past the edit feature as the message descibes "no entries yet". I think that only the artist Valentino (10) was assigned to this label. It would be nice to get this label added to the right place. | ||||
Two sides, both from 1969, by a man with vocal cords that can perform Gymnastics - First, the classic "I Surrender", written by Tony Marks, and it's a light, lilting dancer, much beloved on the Northern Soul scene, and quite rightly, too.
Eddie effortlessly glides through this song, under no pressure at all, a consummate artist, at the top of his game.
The backing crew chug along nicely, with a few nice horn flourishes, a strident rhythm section, a guitarist, who's having a ball, and a plink-a-plink pianist playing his little heart out in the middle eight. All the while, The String Section is floating serenely in back. Sadly, it is all over too quickly, with a very quick fade, what was the tape op. thinking?
Out come the big guns on the second song "I Love You", written by Tony Marks and Sheila Holman, who I think is Eddie's wife. It's an impassioned ballad with the unmistakable quality of Peter deAngelis' arrangement and production skills. Recorded at Virtue Studios, Phila., Pa., the tune kicks off with a lovely flourish of French Horn, repeated throughout, and the Horn section follows at a respectful distance with some tasty fills. The guitarist has a nice time too, playing beautifully, probably a Gibson 335, just like B.B. King, and the strings add just the right sweetening.
But, the man who nails it is Eddie, as he delivers his impassioned vocals, and doesn't he just know how to sell it, I'm sure all the Ladies in the house believe every word, from a brown eyed handsome man. Yes, indeed.
Toward the end of the performance he winds up into his trade mark falsetto - top register, and it sends shivers down your spine.
Oh man, bring Eddie back out again!!
I linked both choons from YouTube - enjoy........
