Paul Hardcastle - Rain Forest - 06-Jan-08 04:47 AM
This has to be one of the greatest electro albums of all time. Unlike nearly all contemporary electronic artists, Paul Hardcastle has a terrific sense of melody and song structure. These tunes are from the era when instrumental electro crossed over into the pop world through Kraftwerk, Herbie Hancock's Rockit and Axel F. Unfortunately Hardcastle only achieved success with '19' due mostly to the novelty value of the stuttering effect of the sampler. This album is a museum of also-ran tracks that had the potential to be every bit as popular as those mentioned above. It would take over 10 years before the likes of James Stinson and Ed DMX would re-explore Paul's light touch. (The cover of DMX Krew's 'We are DMX' is certainly an homage to this album)
Cliche - Cliche Trax - 27-Dec-07 04:30 AM
'When the Snow Falls' is the standout track on this release. It has all sorts of unusual percussive sounds through it and then breaks down into a catchy little signature melody. Nice harmonies and variations then play the track out. More categorized as electronica than house/techno as are most Djax releases. Could stand up well against Model 500, Stefan Robbers or Aphex. Nothing terribly special about the other tracks, which are in a more 909 techno vein.
