why i rate records on discogs:
slowly and randomly working through my collection, just for me to remember, not in order to show others that i "understood" a record...
-----
how i rate records on discogs:
first of all i rarely would rate a record younger than five years, preferably even older than seven to ten years. music has to age at least a bit so it can be judged out of its context.
5: timeless classic. i'd give that rating very very seldomly. in order for that i really must like every single track on such a record.
4: that's a good record. i would play that in my sets. most likely i will find every or at least most of the tracks really good. most likely i will check out more releases by this artist. if there's just one good track on that record it would have to be outstanding to justify a rating like this.
3: between mediocre and okay record. either i keep it for completeness in a label series or because there's at least one track i could use in a set at some point. i would even think about selling this record, though not necessarily.
2: that's one superfluous record i will be going to sell as soon as possible. hence it's not a rating i give because this record is no longer in my collection. further i will ponder ten seconds about how on earth it came into my collection in the first place.
1: that must be some awful record. i wouldn't even sell it, i would destroy it directly. but there's no way how that record could have gotten into my collection, so i will not give this rating.
