DJ Jazzy Jeff - Break It Down - 21-Sep-06 10:15 PM
This particular mix was the one intended for the album, but because of sample clearance problems it remains unreleased......except for this low-key pressing! Easily the best tune of his album, shame it got left off
Sigur Rós - Ágætis Byrjun - 01-Apr-06 05:41 AM
The title Agaetis Byrjun means A good start or An OK start and comes from a comment one of their friends made on hearing an early demo of a song from this album.
If you havent heard any Sigur Ros, this album is the best place to start. It was voted Icelands Album of the Millenium (despite no albums being released in Iceland for the first 9 centuries).
This album, compared to their other efforts is quite string-heavy and also features the singers trademark, playing the guitar with a bow, and the first time they sung in Hopelandic, a made-up language that features heavily in () and Takk.
One aspect of their music that is lost on a lot of their fans is the lyrics. Translations are available on the net, search them out and have a read of them whilst you listen to the album! It should add an extra dimension to their music!
Lost Boyz - Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimaz & Benz (Remix) - 26-Mar-06 08:48 PM
I cant understand the hype behind the LP version, but the slept-on Sparks Meets Dawg mix is one of the Lost Boyzs best tunes. If you like their early stuff, seek out this mix!
Pharoahe Monch - Simon Says / Behind Closed Doors - 24-Mar-06 07:17 PM
A modern day hip-hop anthem that managed the difficult task of pleasing the b-boys and being a club classic. Once that horns sampled from Godzilla came in, you knew there was going to be mayhem on the dancefloor. Sadly this track suffered from over-kill, it was too easy for a DJ to get a reaction from this tune, so for years you would hear it everywhere you went! No-one ever gives credit to Pharoahe Monch for also producing the track himself, he built his reputation as an MC but he also outdid a lot of established beatmakers by making one of the most recognised hip-hop beats of all time!
Das EFX - Real Hip-Hop - 24-Mar-06 07:17 PM
This is the second time raps two heavy-weight producers, at the top of their game, have both done mixes on the same 12" (the first being Jeru Tha Damajas You Cant Stop The Prophet). On any other day, Premos version would have gone down as a classic, but Pete Rock (just as he did on the Jeru tune) blows him out the water with a firing mix which ends up being the best thing Das EFX ever did!
