Leo Cavallo - 24-Sep-09 04:05 AM
Hopefully someone will update the database here to include Leo Cavallo's extensive set of releases on the bandcamp site. These works are on par with other online labels such as the defunct Kyoto Digital, Thinner and Instabil. Deepchord fans will approve and enjoy for sure. Great hiss-filled atmospheres and dubby chord action. While Cavallo doesn't necessarily bring much new to the table in this genre, he certainly doesn't fall short in the quality and execution of his craft. For composers/DJs he even includes the stripped down elements. Check out his works, you won't be disappointed.

Planetary Assault Systems - Temporary Suspension - 16-Jul-09 04:14 AM
I do not think there is any way that Luke Slater could deny being influenced by Jeff Mills with his Planetary Assault Systems project. The Drone Sector album even sporting a Metropolis image on its cover. However it is for that very reason that I discovered and love Planetary Assault Systems. Previous albums like The Drone Sector and The Elecric Funk Machine reeled me in right from the start, and though they had a few cuts not to my liking, were still incredible releases. The Atomic Funkster album was an incredible acheivement and I have to put in a plug for the Kat/Haiku 12inch... stellar! Now we have a new album called Temporary Suspension. Though I have only heard it once I can tell already that Slater has not lost inspiration at all. This album is strong right from the get-go. Spacey, alien techno vibes that I would imagine would impress Mills himself. If you have heard anything by Planetary Assault Systems and liked, this album will not disappoint! Fans of Anthony Child, James Ruskin, etc. give this a listen.

Fatih Tuter - Wide&Shallow - 15-Jul-09 10:12 AM
A stellar debut album that blends ambient, dub, and minimal techno seamlessly. Reminds me of early Yagya material blended with Fluxion. As soothing as a waterfall the hiss and ambient static are the backdrop to muted beats, echoing chords, and metallic strokes of electronic bliss. The majority of the tracks are substantial in length, clocking in on an average of 9 minutes. Easy to get LOST into these lush cuts. Wide & Shallow by Fatih Tuter should not be overlooked, and I look forward to the next release. Essential!!

Martin Schulte - Far Away - 30-Apr-09 04:29 AM
After a healthy number of mp3 releases under his belt, plus two CD albums, Marat Shibaev aka Martin Schulte releases this attractive 3" CD. With limited numbers, snatch this up while you can or you'll regret it. What begins with a haunting atmospheric landscape called "Seaside," ends up taking no prisoners with solid dub techno tracks in style that reminds me of Monolake, Porter Ricks, or Alka. "Far Away" has a dark, aquatic feel overall and picks up where Schulte's "Depth of Soul" album left off. The crescendo "Lunar Empire" is my personal favorite, having a similar sound to acts like Marko Fürstenberg, Sustainer or Octex. Excellent release!

Nine Inch Nails - The Slip - 23-Sep-08 04:49 AM
I cannot read realmdemagic's review and not comment. For one, I must say he/she has written a profound and all-encompassing review of NIN's material, and I slaute that. I also find the descriptions of the last four albums quite accurate, however to state that The Fragile is NIN's greates work is, I think, a huge mistake.

When it comes to music, everyone will have an opinion, of course, but I think that if a poll was taken that the highest scoring (and best selling I may add) album by NIN is The Downward Spiral. In fact, though my personal favorite NIN album is Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral was much more ground breaking than The Fragile was. To me The Fragile would have been a much better album as one CD and not two, which feels like a lot of 'filler' material was added. And though going from Pretty Hate to Broken was a greater contrast, Downward Spiral still brought to the table a whole new experience in emotion and sound that Reznor has never since recaptured.

I am spending way too much time in this section writing about someone else's viewpoint, and not even about the album The Slip, and I apologize for that. As far as The Slip goes, I think it is a decent album. Between the time of With Teeth and The Slip, Year Zero is my favorite, with The Slip coming in a close second. Indeed Reznor has not reinvented anything with these albums, but for die hard fans, "more of the same" never is bad in my opinion.
