Nine Inch Nails - The Slip - 23-Sep-08 04:49 AM
I cannot read realmdemagic's review and not comment. For one, I must say he/she has written a profound and all-encompassing review of NIN's material, and I slaute that. I also find the descriptions of the last four albums quite accurate, however to state that The Fragile is NIN's greates work is, I think, a huge mistake.
When it comes to music, everyone will have an opinion, of course, but I think that if a poll was taken that the highest scoring (and best selling I may add) album by NIN is The Downward Spiral. In fact, though my personal favorite NIN album is Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral was much more ground breaking than The Fragile was. To me The Fragile would have been a much better album as one CD and not two, which feels like a lot of 'filler' material was added. And though going from Pretty Hate to Broken was a greater contrast, Downward Spiral still brought to the table a whole new experience in emotion and sound that Reznor has never since recaptured.
I am spending way too much time in this section writing about someone else's viewpoint, and not even about the album The Slip, and I apologize for that. As far as The Slip goes, I think it is a decent album. Between the time of With Teeth and The Slip, Year Zero is my favorite, with The Slip coming in a close second. Indeed Reznor has not reinvented anything with these albums, but for die hard fans, "more of the same" never is bad in my opinion.
Jeff Mills - 13-Sep-08 08:40 AM
Jeff Mills is a genious. To call him a DJ is very limiting. He is a talented composer who creates scores that generate emotions beyond what any record-spinning club performer can do. Check out Metropolis, From the 21st, or Contact Special... The Other Day compilation, One Man Spaceship... the list goes on. Amazing, and it never gets old. He is the Danny Elfman of techno. Dark, sci-fi out-of-this-world cuts. Thank you Jeff, for doing what you do!!
ARMS - 28-Jun-08 11:31 AM
This is an incredible, consistent series of pure dark techno. If you like the works of Anthony Child (aka Surgeon, British Murder Boys), Grovskopa, James Ruskin, Reeko, etc. you will be pleased with all of the releases on this ARMS label. I own all 15 digital downloads and want more. Some labels change over time or can have weaker releases than others... ARMS is consistently strong all the way through. Dark, fierce and at times haunting. It don't get betta' than dis!
Rod Modell - Incense & Black Light - 17-Jun-08 04:21 AM
Rod Modell continues to be a master of his signature sound without rehashing old material. For those that have an ear for this dubby, dare I say Basic Channel-esque sound, you'll recognize a refined sophistication in "Incense & Black Light" that resonates the perfect marriage between lush ambience and dubby chords. As the main man behind the original, somewhat anonymous Deepchord vinyl releases Modell certainly deserves to have his name in the foreground of this essential release.
One quite noticeable difference with "Incense & Black Light" is the overall tone. Modell has released many warm, dubby and even loopy tunes in his day, but this album definitely exudes a darker, haunting feel. "Temple," for instance, with the eerie shriek that keeps panning from right to left, surrounded by a warbling ghostly hum is spooky yet still dub-friendly with the uninhibited kick drum stabs and innocuous bass-line and eventual metallic chords. If there would be anything negative to say about this release is the tracks could be longer. With an average run time of 6 minutes, it seems somewhat a tease after being accustomed to some Modell 12"s that run in the 11 to 14 minute range.
Various - Selected Moments I - 03-Apr-08 03:34 AM
This is a dreamy, ambient/dubby collection of works by some of the more fresh faces in the dub techno music scene. Imagine Deepchord meets Gas. This CD is not as brooding or dark as Gas, but has a similar flow and minimal beats. You'll find yourself immersed in waves of hiss and muted synths. Though Quantec dominates this CD, the other artists, especially Atheus are not to be taken lightly. These tracks, however, are a slight departure from other releases by Quantec & Atheus as these tracks have a slightly more ambient and mellow tone. I am looking forward to Volume 2, assuming there will be one.
