Matrix - Double Vision / Sedation - 23-Feb-06 03:38 AM
There is no doubt about the outstanding qualitiy of Matrix' late 90s productions. Double Vision & Sedation are pretty good examples, being much influenced by the style Photek and Source Direct endorsed at the time. The tracks are very sparse, brilliantly grooving with every little element in the right place. Incredibly beautiful.

Bennie Maupin - The Jewel In The Lotus - 19-Oct-05 12:35 AM
"Jewel in the lotus" is a "Fusion" classic (in the Bitches-Brew-sense of the word) on the level of records like John McLaughlin's "My Goal's Beyond" or Wayne Shorter's "Odyssey of Iska". Sadly neither Maupin nor this album gained the fame other personnel from Miles Davis early-70s received around that time.

The record hasn't seen a repress or CD release so far, maybe because it doesn't fit ECM's corporate identity sound pretty much. I hope it will see light of day soon again. It more than deserves it.

Optical - To Shape The Future - 21-Mar-05 08:31 AM
I remember very well when I got my hands on this record for the very first time. This was really the future to me, it had nothing to do with any other drum'n'bass record I had heard so far. Most likely this is due to the way Optical arranged elements at that time. It's not just breaks and bassline and some effects... every sample and sound used in here is contributing to the movement of the whole thing.

The Matrix track is absolutely outstanding, too. These 2 guys really shifted aesthetics at that time.

Fresh And Vegas* - Otto's Way / Heatwave - 21-Mar-05 08:31 AM
This Pre-Bad Company release of Fresh & Vegas was mind bending at the time it came out. It somehow blended a funky V-style with NuSchool engineering to deliver two dancefloor bombs, so huge in 1998. Still fresh.

Praxis - 1984 - 29-Oct-04 07:41 AM
What Richie Hawtin's "Consumed" means to techno, Praxis' "1984" means to electro. Stripped down to the scelleton of the DMX beat, the essence of an era clashes with a wall of noise and cut up radio sources. Absolutely outstanding.
