Boards Of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children - 19-Dec-05 01:03 AM
I find it hard to believe that this was made only in 1998. It already feels like a timeless classic. This is the kind of music that makes me reflect on my life especially tracks like "turquoise hexagon sun", "olson", "open the light". Every time I reach the end of the album at "happy cycling" I somehow feel the need for it to transition to "yunx - thinking about your next move" thanks to countless listens to GU024. The best part of MHtRtC for me is I can find at least one thing I like about every single one of the 18 tracks, even the short tracks like "kaini industries" and "olson". My favorites include "roygbiv", "telephasic workshop", "olson", "pete standing alone", "smokes quantity", "open the light"...might as well include everything in the cd.
Doves - Lost Souls - 18-Dec-05 03:36 PM
The most interesting thing I find about Doves is that they used to be an electronic group by the name of Sub Sub until a studio fire destroyed a good amount of their equipment. While they had good productions as Sub Sub like "Space Face" and "Past", they decided to start anew and make completely different kind of music. "Lost Souls", Doves' debut album, would foreshadow their prominence in the rock/alternative/pop genres. The first track, "Firesuite", is a predominantly instrumental track that starts the cd off with a slow, relaxed mood. Track 3, "Break Me Gently", was the song that got me into Doves when I heard the Hybrid version in one of their mixes. I prefer the first half of the cd due to the melancholy, slow paced songs like "Firesuite", "Break Me Gently", "Sea Song" and "Rise". The second half of the CD includes the notable track "Catch the Sun", which just might be the most popular track from this cd. "Lost Souls" is a very quality cd and has little to no filler tracks; almost every song is enjoyable to listen to.
Nick Warren - Global Underground #024: Reykjavik - 05-Jul-05 08:47 AM
By far one of my favorite mix compilations. Nick Warren had intended this to be his last mix album so he could focus on his production works with Way Out West. CD1 starts off with slow, ambient, chillout tracks, working his way through Ulrich Schnauss' "Nobody's Home" and BoC's "Happy Cycling" and the music starts building steam to make its way to an interesting track by Justine Simmons, "Helga Möller" and gets to my favorite part of CD1, where "110 Mistakes" brings into a dialogue from the movie "Naked" (directed by Mike Leigh) about a conspiracy theory, which helps bring in the atmosphere so Nick can bring out the bigger beats and get to "Yewminyst", an outstanding breaks track, and end CD1 with "Love Lost" for a great finish. CD2 gets straight to the point with more fast paced tracks to start off. With Tocharian's "Awakening" leading off, one can tell that CD2 is the more trancy of the two parts. My favorite track on this CD was "Crayons" (RIP Adam Spears), which helps CD2 hold up its own. I wouldn't dare comparing CD2 to CD1; CD1 is just utter brilliance and is enough to make GU024 the best compilation Nick Warren have ever made. CD2 is not left in the dust, though, as it was also an enjoyable listen.
Way Out West - Don't Look Now - 27-Jun-05 07:47 PM
Quality album although I preferred the tracks without vocals to those with. Chasing Rainbows is the best track in my opinion. Very mellow, chilled, then builds up in the end for the finish. I actually liked one of the tracks with vocals, which was Fear. Anything But You is a decent track but I heard the instrumental version on WoW @ Annie Nightingale before I heard the album version (which had vocals) show so I am biased towards the instrumental. A fairly good follow up to Intensify (which is my favorite of the three WoW albums).
Sasha - Arkham Asylum - 27-Jun-05 02:10 PM
Very high quality music jammed into a single vinyl. While the lengths of these two tracks might be an eye opener, it strengthens the feeling of a journey that these tracks bring you through. Ohmna starts off with a dark theme for about 5 minutes then brings out the light and melody that you did not expect. Arkham Asylum is an equally beautiful track. 5/5
