Aaron Carl* - Crucified - 27-Apr-08 01:41 PM
I was so sceptical when I saw that someone had decided to release this record again. There had been so many different remixes done before and I almost didn't listen to it on principal.
However, I'm very glad I did. The Rod Modell remix is an absolute belter and probably my favourite from the many that have been done. Not much to it, its just a deep repetitive hypnotic groover, but its unbelievably effective in its simplicity.
Essential.
A:xus - The Guidance Collection - 01-Apr-08 02:40 AM
Possibly the best cd Muzik magazine ever gave away and is without doubt one of the best in my collection.
This cd oozes sunshine with its blend of deep, soulful and groovey house music. Every record is a winner, but the standout being When I Fall at the end, soulful uplifting house music at its best. Its better than the actual Guidance Records compilation that came out around the same time as welll.
This is best listened to on a beach with a beer, but is not a pre-requisite, it still sounds good on a rainy afternoon in London.
Amethyst - 25-Mar-08 11:08 AM
Most purists regard trance as a dirty word in electronic music, supposedly devoid of soul, trashy and pointless.
I'd put forward this pair as the exception to the rule. They made some absolutely blinding tunes together, and Jon Horrocks as Jon Vesta, continued to do so on his own until he sadly took his life.
Listening to Futura you can tell it really meant something to its creator. Driving, dark and dare I say it soulful. You can really feel what they were trying to do and how important it was that it was put to vinyl. It feels like it was imperative that the music be communicated to the outside world.
That is the sign of great music, whatever genre it might be, the fact that most trance is so terrible ought not mean that artists such as Amethyst should be overlooked. There are other great trance records, but none that are as powerful as the ones this pair made.
John Digweed - Choice: A Collection Of Classics - 02-Mar-08 04:02 AM
This is certainly one of my favourite mix cds that I own. This selection of tracks manages to capture the optimism and hope, that was the context for a lot of early 90's house music, so well. Its not only a collection of great music, its also managed to capture and transport some of the spirit that surrounded early 90's house music.
It perhaps stands out so well, because John Digweed has been able to look back and only select timeless tracks that dont sound dated now and deliberately not gone for the obvious. As a result, even though it has come out at a time when dance music is so dark, twisted and cynical, it still sounds so fresh, new and full of hope.
Even if you were there the first time round this is still a release not to be missed.
Âme - Mifune / Shiro - 17-Jul-07 11:55 AM
Whilst Ame will be remembered by most for Rej, it will always be Shiro for me.
Such a powerful release, based around such a hypnotic melody that continues to repeat itself, whilst the tension continues to build and build.
Whilst its a strictly a mixture of detroit techno and house, it reminds me a lot of some of the stuff Steve Reich has done.
