Aphex Twin - 14-Aug-07 11:34 PM
Rich is a superb musician. While his style and recording alias often varies, most of his material is excellent. Needless to say, hes recorded under many different aliases, and nearly all of them have a song worth listening to. Aphex Twin has many well-known tunes, like Come to Daddy, Windowlicker and Milkman. Almost all of AFXs EPs are excellent. Bradley Striders two EPs are somewhat lackluster, but the A-side of Bradleys Beat is a good dance track. Power-Pill has the 5-track Pac-Man EP, which is a great listen regardless of whether or not you like the game. The GAK EP is very minimalist and simplistic, but worth a listen anyway.
All in all, youd be hard-pressed to find a bad RDJ song, under any alias. If youre looking to get started, I recommend the Come to Daddy EP, or maybe one of the Analord EPs. Both showcase RDJ at his finest, although the style between both is different.
AFX* - Analogue Bubblebath Vol. 3.1 - 13-Aug-07 02:28 PM
This is a well-meaning entry in the AB series; its meant to be a companion to AB3 on vinyl, as all but one of this EPs tracks appear on the expanded CD. In that respect, it works well. The opening track isnt a great starter, though; its quite boring and repetitive. The next track, though, is an improvement; while it feels like a re-tooled version of COME ON YOU SLAGS! from I Care Because You Do, as it runs at the same speed and ends just as abruptly, its catchy enough to work.
After the sound of a bathtub draining, we are treated to an ambient track similar to something from SAW1. This track works in the way that SAW1 worked-- the melodies are lush, the beat simple, and the effect long-lasting. After a locked groove comes modulated voices talking about most vulgar things. This is a highly unusual track (anyone whos heard it knows), and it may or may not shock you in the way that South Park shocks people-- crude, juvenile, and hilarious.
Overall, AB 3.1 is a good companion piece to AB3, but it also works well on its own. Its not exactly Analord 03, but its worth a listen.
Aphex Twin - Analord 10 - 13-Aug-07 02:24 PM
Analord 10 is mercifully short, but of a high quality. Fenix Funk 5 displays melodies that remind the listener of Drukqs, whose rapid speedcore tracks were surprisingly melodic. While this track only really picks up after one minute, it is worth listening to.
XMD5a opens in a dark, brooding sort of way. When the drums begin to make their way in through the woodwork, it develops into a nice little acid tune. The intro is unusual compared to the rest of the track, but it has the ambient touch youd hear from SAW2.
All in all, this is another high-quality Analord release. Definitely worth a listen.
AFX* - Analord 03 - 13-Aug-07 12:57 PM
This one is worth picking up just to hear Boxing Day, one of the tracks worthy enough to appear on the Chosen Lords CD. Its a well-executed jumble of thick synth melodies that gets richer with every listen. Klopjob is more of the same, but it is best to treat it as a companion piece, as it uses one of the drum samples Boxing Day does and runs at the same speed. Incidentally, it appears on Chosen lords as well.
The Midievil Rave tracks pale in comparison to the leading tracks, but they are listenable. They keep repeating themselves to the point where a new melodys introduction sounds unusual, but Analord 09 has tracks that are even more guilty of this crime.
Overall, its not the best of the series (that would be Analord 04), but the leading tracks on both sides are excellent and hold your attention long enough to be worth listening to multiple times.
AFX* - Analord 11 - 13-Aug-07 12:56 PM
As we come to the final entry in the superb Analord series, one drops the needle with high expectations. I expected a real dynamite closer. Needless to say, my wish is RDJs command.
The A side isnt particularly remarkable. Its melody gets somewhat boring after a few minutes, but the outro is very strong. VBS.Redlof.B is an exceptional dance track-- just the right speed, just the right melody. Everything in this track clicks perfectly. The final track of the Analord series, Backdoor.Ranky.S, feels like something from SAW1. It works as an ambient track, and serves as a nice closer to the series.
As the finale to an excellent series of EPs, Analord 11 works wonders. Its not the greatest in the series, but it is still of a high quality and worth picking up.
