Sully (5) - Trackside / Duke St Dub
Apr 15, 2009
For me its all about Duke St Dub on this one. A massive new-wave garage cut that takes its influences from the end of the last millenium to create a sound perfect for the summer of 2009. Scittering beats, Todd Edwards style vocal snippets and jazzy keys weave in and out of the driving sub-bass creating an uplifting vibe which will have the girl dem a dancing! Norwich based Sully is a producer to watch this year and Matasyn, for me is becoming a "buy on sight" label.
Donae'o - Party Hard
Apr 14, 2009
One of the biggest Funky tracks of 2009 so far, this has been getting a caning on the London pirate stations. The instrumental is the one for me though - basically a subtle refix of Canadian producer Suges "We Belong To The Night",removing the new age vocal and adding some grimey synths. This track works in a Funky set or with more straight up House gear. The fact that Suges' track is not available on vinyl makes this an essential purchase.
Various - Wigflex EP
Apr 06, 2009
Excellent first release on this Nottingham based label containing tracks by four up and coming producers. The tracks sit somewhere between techno and dubstep taking a different approach to producers like 2562 and Martyn yet fitting perfectly within that style. There are hints of a UK Funky influence and these tracks would work with tracks by people like Roska and Kode 9's recent output. If they can keep up this standard on subsequent releases Wigflex looks like being one of the hottest labels around.
Subeena - Subeena EP
Mar 27, 2009
This four-track ep has a nice range of styles on offer, with the standout cut for me being the lovely dubby breakbeat of Boksd. The lush electronic soundscape float on top of a heavy sub-bass,I think it would make a perfect opener in an experimental dubstep set.
Znare the second track on the A-side is a very different affair with Lisbon based MC Violet's grime-style lyrics riding the raw, bashment style riddim. On the flip there is a remix of Mexican electronica artist Pepepe's Augosto Morado. The track slowly builds from subtle electronics into a mid-paced techno-style offering. The closing track 2080 is chugging future house business that would sit perfectly next to Kassem Mosse or Matias Aguayo. | ||||
