Various - The Very Best Of The Chillout Session - 16-Jan-07 06:43 AM
If you can look past the cheap-looking cover art and the sensational title, and if you ignore the second CD, you're left with an excellent compilation of mostly laid-back, down-tempo songs that lie somewhere between pop and electronic music. I've already listened to it countless times.
I start with the bad news, which in this case is CD 2. I hardly ever listen to that one, probably because it kicks off with that annoying "Eple" song. Other than with CD 1, the tracks here are definitely more electronic than pop. Still, it's not nearly as good as...
CD 1: It's not so much the mixing that makes this CD great (transitions between songs are unspectacular and very brief, which is actually a good thing here), but there are just so many excellent songs. There's probably not a single one that I don't like, but quite a few are simply outstanding, e.g. tracks #20 by The Belles, #18 by Paul Jackson & Steve Smith, #17 by Mr Natural, #14 by the Sneaker Pimps, #9 by Groove Armada, #8 by Kinobe, #6 by Badly Drawn Boy, and #3 by Aqualung. The CD is definitely at its best towards the end. Enjoy!
Egg, The - Travelator - 19-Dec-03 07:32 AM
One of the more emotional albums in my collection. There's some very melancholic music on here; in fact I can't listen to that album too often, as it tends to make me quite depressed. Nice once in a while, nevertheless.
T.Raumschmiere - Radio Blackout - 19-Dec-03 07:24 AM
Not long before I got this album, T.Raumschmiere played along with Si Begg near my place. It was an event that I enjoyed a lot, so I expected this album to be similar to the great, unusual music I had heard -- which unfortunately is only the case with one, two tracks here (among others, B1 is among the better tracks, IMHO). The rest is just too noisy and aggravating to me.
Spaceport Orkestra Of Benares - The Ganesh Beat Club Sessions - 28-Oct-03 11:07 AM
There's some brilliant music on this album (which has a strong Indian flavour to it, as you can guess from the title and the exotic appearances). I like especially the first half of it; the second one seems a little less diverse, probably because some tracks there are just different versions of earlier tracks. Nevertheless, just the first few tracks are so well-done that they easily justfify buying the whole album.
Him & The Drinks - The Cooling Cake - 31-Aug-03 10:08 AM
The currently listed style "Downtempo" doesn't quite do this great release justice. This is jazzy lounge music with a very Mediterranean or Parisian feel (which is probably due to the accordeons used).
