Kill Frenzy - 54321 EP - 20-Jul-09 06:30 AM
This is not exactly my type of music, but I gladly admit "54321" is a very well and cleverly made tune. Starting with a gabber/hardcore style, which is not really my cup of tea, I nearly turned away from it, but because of the magnificent switch at 3:51, I fell rather deeply in love with this track -- it puts a smile on my face every time again. Suits perfectly in your "Alone On The Highway" iTunes playlist.

Glimmers, The - Eskimo Volume V - 05-Sep-08 01:22 PM
Sadly, this appears to be the weakest chapter up to date in the otherwise thrilling Eskimo series. The Glimmers, masters in digging up hidden treasures and mixing them up like they never ever did anything else, seemed to have had a bad hair day when recording this set. The whole mix is lukewarm, never peaks, maintains one level and has one too many mediocre songs. No hoorays, no nifty switches. Luckily there's more than enough to enjoy from this golden duo, but this just doesn't fit in the whole Eskimo concept and, by extension, it doesn't match up with the quality level The Glimmers have reached with their other releases. If you're not short on cash, pay any price for their Serie Noire sets, especially the first one, and get a hand on the other four Eskimo's and their FabricLive release. No hard feelings after this one !

Various - The Smoocher - 12 Finely Matured Soul Tracks - 12-Jun-08 05:54 AM
I especially purchased this for track 1, Kellee Patterson's cover of Barry White's 'I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little Bit More, Baby'. Arguably this contains the funkiest, most sensual and most teasing first minute on the funkier side of soul music. The whole track outstands Barry's original - given his amount of funk and smoochiness, that's quite an achievement. Sadly, these days this track is not that easy to find on CD, and purchasing the whole album ('Kellee') on CD is nearly impossible. Of course, there are still 11 tracks left, and they are exactly what the title states : a recommended collection of smoochy, funky, finely matured soul beauties. Hard to pick some, but other highlights include Al Johnson's 'I've Got My Second Wind' and the ever fantastic Betty Wright's 'Value Your Love'. A very solid release from a label to hold an eye on.

Various - Go Girl! Soul Sisters Tellin' It Like It Is - 05-Jun-08 09:56 AM
Well, what we've got here is a nothing but outstanding collection of 100% female soul and R & B singers, presented in impeccable audio quality. Broken hearts, laughs and tears, it's all in here. Acclaimed stars share the light with some lesser known ones, but none of these tracks is misplaced or lacks quality : this is a tight as hell piece of girlpowerrr avant la lettre. Not to be missed ; highly recommended stuff for anyone's collection.

Various - Diggin The Crates - 05-Jun-08 02:36 AM
On first sight, this might look well suited for your 'classics in their full length' collection, and there's little doubt this release contains some truly nice gems (Set It Off, Body Mechanic, etc.), but be aware that most of these tracks are minor to standard cleaned up vinyl rips. If that will do for you, dig this crate, but in my book this is a missed opportunity, and, on a side note, rather false advertising.
