Ex-Cocaine - Age Of Time - 06-Jan-08 02:50 AM
Instantly forgettable and very substandard release from Ex-Cocaine here; 2 sides of aimless, plodding scree. think their LPs with any semblance of tunes, structure or fidelity removed and youre getting there... in other words, everything that makes Ex-Cocaine at all notable -- the tension between blown-out song and jam -- is gone. and they werent exactly the Flying Burrito Brothers to begin with.

recommended for Ex-Cocaine and Heavy Tapes completists only. for the latter, this cassette seems to have been released in a relatively high edition number anyway -- copies are still readily available from distributors a year and a half after its release.

Tony Allen - Ole - 13-Feb-07 04:48 AM
as much as I liked Mark Ernestus attempts from last year, Moritz has one-upped him with his mix here. languidly building organic house, very much in line with his Rhythm & Sound productions, but more uplifting in mood. rolling percussion, lovingly phased guitar, unintrusive vocals, R+S trademarked rising chords and, of course, a bassline that will still be stuck in your head weeks later.

simply perfection. what a start for 07.

Villalobos* - Fizheuer Zieheuer - 05-Jan-07 06:27 AM
Blehorkestar Bakic - Pobjednicki Cocek (Ricardo Villalobos remix) might be a more accurate title than Fizheuer Zieheuer, but hearing the source material confirms all my original feelings about the track.

FZ is a very simple, very good idea -- efficiently executed to create an unforgettable moment on an unknowing post-7AM dancefloor (cf Villalobos interviews where hes mentioned creating such moments is his key goal when hes DJing). pressing this up for general public consumption surely wasnt his initial plan in April... its a weapon intended for Villalobos and Luciano DJ sets. once you know what it is, the surprise goes + the effect somewhat fades. it obviously didnt take him very long to make. you could tell that from the off, listening to the simplicity of the sound engineering/beat compared to his other recent releases.

this is still my favourite track of the year -- precisely because of those moments. the look of elation on my friends face the first time she heard it out (the first time shed ever heard it, period) was priceless and will stay with me forever.

most importantly, it makes me smile. this track is FUN -- with the critical boutique store response (Other Music, Boomkat, Aquarius + etc) its easy to forget that -- but remember, this is music for dancing and smiling, not for chin-stroking.
