Spicelab - Spy Vs. Spice - 03-Jun-08 07:23 PM
I did not hear this album until approximately 10 yrs after its release. When I first heard it I remember that it evoked visions of a (somewhat) dark (more technologically advanced) future. This, despite the fact that it was already 10 yrs old. Well, I am listening to it right now, more than 2 yrs later, and it still feels like something that will be in the future.

The sound is crisp (well produced), and this was clearly made as a full journey rather than a compilation of individual tracks. Composition-wise, the music is thick. I'm always finding new things each time I listen. You know that feeling of listening to a song for the first time, despite the fact that you have listened to it many times? The music progresses relentlessly and effortlessly, never getting tired.

Good for dancing and/or the mind. If you must, you can force it into the box of trance with a very techy edge.

One word summary: classic

You can easily find used copies online for less than US$10. What are you waiting for?

Baseliner is one hell of a minimal track! Nice psychedelic, almost palpable bassline, with clean deep 3DFX flying about, somewhat reminiscnet of a dreary dungeon. But overall the track is not so dark. The track progresses slowly, but surely, building a little more energy at each step. And somehow they manage to get away with a very skimpy set of sounds without becoming too boring.

Sandman (2) - Psycho Toons - 10-Apr-04 07:59 PM
A masterpiece! I remember when I first purchased this album I was quite disappointed. I was hoping for something along the lines of his first album, 'Witchcraft' -- dark and apocalyptic. That does not describe this album at all.

Luckliy I decided to give this album a second chance. This album is much more mature than the last. First, this is a real album, not just a compilation of tracks by Mr. Levy. You can very much tell that he sat down with the mindset of creating a complete work which will take you on a journey. The artwork and the tracks are clearly built around the idea of Psycho Toons. We are given the added bonus of the tracks fading into one another, which is so important to maintaining a 65 minute trance.

The light and the darkness can be found on this album. Sandman seems to move between them with ease, giving the effect of being on a very smooth rollercoaster. And indeed this coaster is fun, because Levy never seems to take himself too seriously during this album -- no posing, if you know hat I mean. The tracks are thoughtful and complex, with patient building of layers, weird noises all around, crystal clear production, and all the twists and turns required to keep one's interest. More dynamic than 99% of the last few years' psy-trance releases.

To top it all off the artwork provides a humorous mindf**k, especially the back cover and the inside of the front cover. The art seems inspired by the old Wile E. Coyote and Roadrnner cartoons, but it's much more. Very detailed. Accompanying artwork always has a huge influence on the feelings and the colors I see while listening to an album, and I'm very happy with what they chose. It gives you a good reason to go buy a copy instead of settling for a burned copy =)!

The first half of this CD is hard techno, with a touch of psy. The second half is some downtempo stuff. Unfortunately this CD gets very boring very quickly because they use the same exact sounds in almost all the tracks. The downtempo tracks are more varied, but they still manage to recycle some abrasive sounds they used in the techno tracks.

This CD, as most other Sphere/Kukomi Records releases, had major sound quality issues! This particular CD was in mono/pseudostereo, and consequently sounds very flat. It was later re-issued on BNE/Yo-Yo Records, with much improved sound quality.
