St. Che* - Be My.. / The Exquisite Act - 24-Aug-04 11:35 PM
This release plods the samey mixes that Sherwood, Skip, Doug, Le Blanc and Fats Comet (pretty much Tackhead circa the classic Tape-Time, sans Gary Clail)... a veritable ghost train of electro dub funk a samey backing track that they put to better use on a few other on-u releases - most have stood the test of time better though. This Be My Powerstation is let down by weak lead vocals sung over the otherwise excellent backing track, - pretty much like an FM radio friendly white bread pop version of what they doing with Mark Stewart. Not long after this release the on-u crew worked with a much stronger vocalist/ideas man, Trent Reznor for his Pretty Hate Machine sessions, then i guess the On-U posse finally got some cheques in the post worth cashing.

Amazing to find on the flip a mythical story read by Sian Phillips from the Royal Shakespear Company -The Exquisite Act - always a treat to put on the decks that one!

My copy is a white label, it has blank yellow & white paper labels - the artist is CHE -SIREN 6123-1I-1U-1-1. They also put out an album/cd Narcotic (also on siren) which includes Be My Powerstation, but sady not The Exquisite Act.

Andy Fairley - System Vertigo - 29-Nov-03 06:47 PM
One of the strangest releases on On-U Sound & thats saying something! The frantic wall of grinding beats intro to "I Stopped The Clock" still sounds great 10 years later though (this album must be a goldmine for a scratch dj) - so many ideas crammed in. Another highlight is The Election (Part1 & 2) & the the track that wraps it up "False Starts" with its lighter more optomistic feel yet still driven by beats.

Red Star - Stranger Fruit - 20-Nov-03 10:48 PM
This release has echos of a previous release Pretender (the catchy dubby keyboard riff) but this 4 track 12" is a far fiercer animal that actually has some teeth. it even sounds like dark drum & bass at 45 but really shines at 33 - its worth tracking down for the spacey Journey dub alone - but all the tracks are set worthy.
