Tadd Mullinix - 16-Jul-04 01:05 PM
Whether its the next-level instrumental hip-hop as Dabrye, the warped house of James Cotton, the manic roots-ragga jungle with partner-in-crime Todd Osborn as Soundmurderer and SK-1, or the glitch-via-Mozart abstractions under his given name, you can always be assured that Tadd Mullinix is going to be destroying boundaries and making fantastic music with whatever he touches.
Dykehouse - Midrange - 15-Jul-04 06:05 AM
Neither drumnbass, IDM, or electro - but its damn good, and thats what matters here.
"Midrange" sees the always-interesting Mike Dykehouse on a classic shoegaze kick thatll have you busting out those old MBV and Slowdive records.
Interspersed with short and very pretty ambient interludes, Dykehouse seemingly effortlessly creates three-minute pieces of noise-pop bliss. From the orgasmic wall-of-sound guitar rush of "When You Come" to grinding lead single "Chain Smoking" to the sensitive introspection and cinematic grandeur of the lovely "Western Lands," Dykehouse has crafted one of the best and most intriguing releases of the year thus far.
Various - SMM Vol.1 - 28-May-04 11:51 AM
Five tracks of lovely, pastoral ambient from the always exciting Ghostly International crew. Electro-acoustic duo Kiln conjure layers of reverb-drenched guitar over lovely electronics in "Isthmus," evoking images of the sweeping beauty of their native Michigans bountiful woodlands. Kiln show up with the other two highlights of the collection, with the gorgeous, droning atmospherics of "Signals" and "Glasting Malvo."
Altgether a lovely collection and a solid reminder that Ghostlys peerless eclecticism is a clear pointer to the way ahead.
Glass Domain - Glass Domain - 31-Jan-04 08:30 PM
Clone has really done us a service in bringing back this long-lost classic techno-electro gem. All four cuts are solid, but its the marriage of flawless drum programming with an 80s pop vibe that make "Interlock" the clear standout here. An absolutely essential purchase for the discerning retro-techno head.
Kenneth Graham - Carrier Wave - 13-Dec-03 08:28 PM
Spectacular release. Grahams original is a minimal bit of techy goodness, but its Bryan Zentzs interpretation that really takes the honors here. At the hands of Zentz, "Carrier Wave" becomes a deep, proggy, pulsing, hypnotic track that emphasizes the originals tribal elements while adding nice atmospheric touches. Absolutely essential record.
