Reviews & Discussion:
Fourteen releases in over three years of existence might not be much, but Border Community is all about quality, not quantity (sadly not the case with most labels).
Their catalog includes "The Sky Was Pink", "Soopertrack" and "Gazebo" - three superb tracks that have proven in different ways that dance music can be made with intelligence and emotion at the same time. If you thought that house music was dull and burned out, these people want to make you think again.
I always advise this record to people who are looking to be introduced to intelligent, alternative, dance music. The mixing is flawless (albeit not too ambitious) and the selection is pure gold. No filler tracks here, every track is a high-light!
Gritty, forward-thinking electro and techno for the 21st century. My personal fave mix album and one of my favorite dj's.
In my opinion, the very best producers out there. Sure, every song sounds a little like the others, but that's because they almost always employ the same kind of "hooks": sexy, irresistible basslines, mellow vocals (although lately they have become grittier) and catchy melodies. They have an extensive curriculum as kick-ass remixers, and this is where they excel!
You must check out: Own Material-> Chemical Sweet Girl, Italian Fireflies Remixes-> Justin Robertson feat. Revtone - Everpresent, Märtini Brös - The Biggest Fan; Playgroup - Number One; Depeche Mode - Something to Do; The Hacker, David Carretta and The Modernist - Moskow Reisen.
After Nelly's "Hot in Herre", Tiga does the hip hop routine over again, this time covering Public Enemy's "Louder than a Bomb". I don't know the original, but I like this rework. It's tongue-in-cheek (although a little less than "Hot in Herre") but at the same time pretty hard-edged. Unlike other stuff Tiga's been doing (like the very weak and very overrated "Pleasure from the Bass") this is cool stuff. | ||||
Ivan Smagghe takes a definite departure from the electro-house beats of "Suck My Deck" and "Death Disco" and brings us a collection of brooding, atmospheric electro and techno with a refreshing minimalist sensibility. It is mixed together with skill, imagination and cohesiveness - even as he brings out The Kills, it all fits together perfectly. It is definetely not for purists, though!
One of the characteristics of a good mix-album is that highlights are hard to name, but if I had to choose I'd go with Iñaqui Marin and Flügel's remix of "Just F**king".
I have to say though, I have seen him dj once since the release of this record and was hugely disapointed, for the particular brand of boring thumping techno which he chose to play was nowhere near as refreshing as this selection.
