Limewax - The Limewax EP - Part Two - 10-Apr-08 07:46 AM
Absolutely breathtaking.
The best two drum and bass tracks Ive heard in three years. One Of Them starts in a similarly epic vein as Dom & Black Sun Empires 300 movie sampling Sparta then charges headlong into what was called in ye olden days Neuro Funk bouncing back and fore between the titular sample. Like a workout track for Hondas car manufacturing robots. Then the epic strings come back in again - simple but dear God its so effective. Rather than plundering gore-porn movies for samples (yawn) I can imagine Hostel III might use this as a background track. In an ultimately futile chase-sequence perhaps?
Demolished again mixes both epic and ominous strings with futuristicly rhythmic beats. In my head Im playing Crackdown to this, running full pelt across rooftops - rocket launching trucks to pieces. Superb.
Of the dozen and a half Limewax tracks/mixes Ive heard these stand head and shoulders above the rest. Not heard it yet, but I wonder if Part One is just as good?
Various - Musiques Pour Les Plantes Vertes - 03-Mar-03 12:48 PM
Ever seen this in the shops? Me neither. This eclectic collection of French mood music predates the irregular Megasoft Office series and is just as essential a purchase.
Released in 1996 this could well be the best cd of non-chill chill-out released on FCom. Seldom do compilations have the vibe and cohesiveness of a single artist album (although mags will tell you they do), but this one is true to form - track after track. Ok, I listened to it constantly whilst going through a difficult separation from my fiancee - but bias aside, its most noteworthy for the quality Dj Cam track Life (as good as anything on Substances), Juantrips Switch Out The Sun (stick that up yer arse Beloved!) and Scan Xs Turmoil which outdoes even Namlook for reverb packed drone-tasticness.
Seek out a copy.
Reload - A Collection Of Short Stories - 13-Nov-02 01:17 AM
Samples from the film 2001 (among others) probably seem a bit passe nowadays, but make no mistake, this is a real classic release. I remember reading William Gibsons "Neuromancer" at the same time as I bought this and the two are forever linked in my head. Sci-fi soundscapes, quality melodies and then occassional moments of bonkers industrial-ness all add up to one truly proper "album".
