II Exodus - Silence Too Exodus - 31-Mar-08 03:52 PM
This has to have a review!! Quality, Dark 92 hardcore. Reminds me of dreadlocks, bonfires, fields and big soundsystems. Has eastern and reggae influences in it and although being generally dark and raw it is still well produced. I think this is one of my favourite 12's from this era. Every tune is a cracker. Im surprised more people dont own this. For me it epitomizes the darker side of the hardcore scene at the time. This one was never getting in the charts.
"Where have you been?...Too Exodus" Killer!!!
Back From Detox - E.R.B. - 23-Aug-07 12:07 PM
Another good release from Shut Up And Dance. Not quite as full on as the Codeine tracks but definately one of their harder ones, and a bit of a warehouse stomper, especially the B side 'Dove People' There seems to be a bit of drug promotion going on here. E.R.B. has the sample "I just wanna say that a lot of you cats who dont think marijuana should be legalized...well your all f***ed" ...and 'Dove People'...well anyone who was around at the time will know what that probably refers to!
Not the best SUAD release by any means but definately a couple of quality tracks that stood out around the time.
Code 071 - A London Sumtin' - 23-Aug-07 03:13 AM
Im not sure if I would call this jungle, but its definatley one of those tunes that was around during hardcore's progression into jungle and also one of the last hardcore tunes before jungle really took over. Reinforced were pumping out some quality tunes around this time and both sides of this are amonget those. 'Stand Together Yo Breakthrough' is a great Breakbeat track like only UK acts could delivery. There is a reversed break in the background and great synth stabs and arpeggios that really used to get the crowds jumping. The vocal version also has a 'Break The Limits' style rap over it. "We gotta stand as one and break on through" 'A London Sumtin' is a bit slower and deeper with a slow break and deep bass, but is an equally excellent track. "A London sumtin rasta...seen"
Rum & Black - ESQ / Slaves - 23-Aug-07 02:14 AM
As with a lot of their releases Shut Up And Dance saved the best for the B side, and they have done it again with this release. 'Slaves' was a heavily played tune at the time and an important part of not only the 'Shut Up And Dance' catalogue but also of UK dance music as a whole. Its quite an easy going tune and not one of the stormers that was around at the time, and features the voice of KRS ONE. "Lincoln said, in this piece here, he says... he frees the slaves. He said, all slaves in armed rebellion. The slaves. Now understand one point: the African is not a slave, thats one point that they didnt realize when they were writing this. The African is not a slave. The African has a history far more advanced than this nineteen-ninety history were in right now. Hes not a slave. Lincolns ultimately sayin now you were born a slave, youll always be a slave, and all i will ever see you as is a slave, and I free you.
A Guy Called Gerald - Hot Lemonade - 18-Aug-07 12:45 PM
This is such a good album...it should be made impossible to rate it anything other than a 5. Not had a good listen to this for a few years now but for me it still sounds fresh and really well produced even 18 years after its release. Every track is quality and provides an outstanding example of what British producers were doing with the house and acid sounds of the time. The album covers all areas, with great Chicago style acid tracks like 'In The Beginning' and 'K9', really good UK deep house in the form of 'I Am Somebody' and 'Rhythm Of Life', the amazingly chilled 'Music Sweet Music' at about 98BPM and my favourite, the chilled acid sounds of 'Tranquility On Phobos' Not all the music from this era sounds quite as good as it did at the time but this one for me will last forever. Anyone who has never heard this album before, is in for a treat.
