Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare - 15-Jul-08 09:25 AM
No-one will claim that this was ground-breaking stuff, but it is definitely one of the best albums of its genre. The singers much-criticised voice is definitely an acquired taste (though I quite like it); and, as one would expect from thrash metal, the lyrics were never going to worry the Poet Laureate. But if you like Testament, Anthrax, Death Angel and other similar bands of the time, this comes highly recommended. With a furious rhythm section, fast and aggressive riffing, and solos which sound like someone put crack cocaine into the guitarists Jack Daniels, you know you need this.
Larry Levan - Live At The Paradise Garage - 02-Feb-04 05:29 AM
This is one of the most imperfect live mix CDs available, and would simply not obtain a release if it was recorded by a current DJ.
But this was recorded in much more primitive times, when DJ technology wasnt as developed, underground clubs were not all about perfect mixing and 8 hours of identical, formulaic music.
On this CD, you can hear manual adjustments to record speeds, trainwreck mixing and even some ill-advised mix selections, as well as analogue sound quality. Yet it all sounds SO much better than your run-of-the-mill "Now Thats What I Call Making £££ Out Of The Club Scene II" mix CD released today; most of which arent really "live mixes", but are made on computers to ensure perfect beatmatching. zzzzzz....
Why then, is this CD apparently so great?
Because you can really feel the passion the DJ has for the music, and the quality of the music is so high that the recordings technical imperfections dont detract from the experience.
Just imagine that you are there. Imagine that your first rave in 1988 was really a visit to the Paradise Garage in 1970s, and just imagine how you would have felt. Would you have been listening out for technically-perfect DJing, or would you have been having the time of your life, at the start of something significant?
Since buying this, I have listened to this dozens of times, and it still sounds amazing. Buy this and listen to history being made. It really is that good.
Sugarhill Gang, The* vs. Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - The Showdown - 03-Dec-03 09:14 AM
5/5 for the original tunes, but the "boxing match" commentaries dont really add much, and are rather cheesy to be honest. Personally Id have preferred the disc if it was just a compilation of the 12 original tracks.
Don, The - The Horn Song - 03-Dec-03 07:52 AM
This an absolute TUNE, and was Pierres best release for a very long time.
The main hook was used on DJ Jeans awful "The Launch" tune in 1999... which did nothing except make the original sound even better. :D
DV8 - The Egotrip EP - 03-Dec-03 07:23 AM
I often used the bells at the start of "This Beat Is Over" to begin a set, or to take over from someone else when beatmixing from the previous DJs tune seemed impossible for me to mix into.
Another deep house classic from the SR stable.
