50 Cent - Wanksta - 18-Dec-06 04:55 PM
Good song. Comparing to the stuff that Mr. Jackson is up to nowadays, this one is the bomb. I dont know if Im the only one who hears in "Wanksta", the theme from Toddy Tees "Batteram" made back in 85, but Im pretty sure that producers were under heavy influence by that classic. It mustve been a coincidence - it happens all the time. And the lyrical reference to Lil Bow Wow is oooh, so awesome!
Warren G & Nate Dogg / 2Pac - Regulate / Pain - 21-Oct-06 09:05 AM
This is the one of the gems in the hip hop 12" world. Such a powerful record that out of 3 songs youll find 3 classics. But, Ill stick to the "Pain" by 2Pac & Stretch. I dont really know why the destiny of this song is to be sooo underrated. I mean, it almost never appears on "the best of" compilations/mixtapes of 2Pac. The possible reasons come to mind... Is it because it appeared on the b-side of Warren Gs single and not on any of 2Pacs lps (compilations excluded)? Is the reason (possible) unsolved copyright between Interscope and 2Pacs family? Is it because the man he has done this song with - Randy "Stretch" Walker - was said to be involved in the robbery and assault on 2Pac on 30th of November 1994. when Pac caught 5 bullets? Is it because 2Pac reffers to himself as "nigga with a mother on drugs" (where "drugs" maybe stand for "narcotics") so it made his mother upset and made her put away this monster of a song when she got hold of the copyrights (if she got it)? Is it because it belongs to the pre-"Me against the world" era of 2Pacs lyricism so that it shares the same destiny of the great albums such are "Strictly for my N(ever)I(gnorant)G(ettin)G(oals)A(complished)Z" and Thug Life - "Vol. 1" - to not be recognised by "new" fans who like the mans more commercial stuff? But let aside all of these questions and many more that this song and its destiny can raise and let me tell a few things about the song itself. First of all, this is one of the best if not THE BEST song which so called "gangsta rap" has given to the world of music. Full-on emotion in lyrics and delivery by both men involved with the song -the men who both died in the period of 2 years after the song had been recorded - 2Pac & Stretch. It tells the story of the stress which is upon a man who is steady mobbin, who lives that thug life from the subjects (both 2Pacs and Stretchs) point of view. Where Geto Boys with "Mind playin tricks on me" had given somewhat dark-comedy-psychotic-neurotic expression of the matter, 2Pac & Stretch tell it straight. There is no big wordplays here, metaphors or mc stuff like that, but the on point lyrics, delivery and the flow with the dope-as-hell downtempo beat gives this song its CLASSIC status. I remember the January of 95 when there was a regular hip hop party in Belgrade, Serbia local club "Industrija" and when my friends and myself heard the song for the first time at the end of the party. We could tell its 2Pac but we didnt know anything about the song, and listening to the lyrics, THE PAIN and THE LUST FOR LIFE in both 2Pacs and Stretchs voices, made us realize at that first acquaintance with the song that its "something else" and that it will stay with us for the rest of our lives. You can quote me on this - I say that all 2Pacs lyrics on struggle after 1994. are no more than pale footnotes of "Pain" - the anthem that Ive been writing about here (for a half an hour now:) and the song that Ill be rockin on my system forever.
Nasty Habits - Shadow Boxing / Prototyped - 23-Dec-05 03:41 AM
Small wonder that a great dj such as Laurent Garnier had chosen this one for his favourite tune of the 1996. Everytime when played, THE Bassline comes in and doesnt leave anything untouched in radius of approx. 1000000 light years! Supported with a rough, rugged and raw sounding 2-step beat - this one has it all! Those were the days when 31 had started to reign supreme with the each next 12" better than the one before... at least until 31R017 release.
Known Unknown - The Known:Unknown Sessions @ Moving Shadow - 23-Dec-05 03:38 AM
This is one hell of a record! Mad piano intro on the Chaos edit gets you in for a wildest ride in the dnb history - such a powerful beats and bassline filled with some crazy scratching stuff - the R.A.W.-est one around! Rollers edit has even more of a bass in it and the only problem with this record is that djs usually cant choose between equally great sides! I wish that all records I have wouldve been like this one or "How you make me feel/Neptune" by M.I.S.T. - than I would have 2 times less vinyl in my bedroom :). Anyway, love it and respect it as Doms best production.
Polar - Skydiver - 03-Oct-05 09:18 PM
This record has it all!!! "Skydiver" rocks like mad - turning you upside down in no time and then coming back for more!!! With those percussions so precisely put together, you cant do nothing else bud dance, dance, dance... Other 2 tracks - Polar at his best - no mistakes made!
