John B - Pressure / Travelogue - 23-Jun-03 11:45 AM
Pressure is and will always remain a true classic. A heart wrenching signature intro belies the biggest fattest drumline and squelchy analogue bass that are to come. Come to think of it, you could describe Travelogue the same way. Both have that essential element, soul, that most of John B. Williams´ tracks exude, even that dodgy b side of Up All Night. Watch out for the extra half bar in the breakdown of Pressure that´ll knock your mix sideways if you´re not careful...
Twisted Anger - Take It / The Latin Thing - 23-Jun-03 11:35 AM
The Latin Thing´s a nice enough tune, great bass as you´d expect from the dread camp, but that piano riff will seriously get on your nerves after the 50th time it plays. Or sooner. You can have a lot of fun chopping about with the long intro, but you´d better get the next one on quick because the crowd are going to tire fairly fast. The A side is monotonous, anonymous rubbish.
Various - Combustion EP - 23-Jun-03 11:31 AM
Forget the other tracks, the only reason you´re buying this double pack is for mask: mad professor. A caning tune, a balcony tune, the be all and end all of hands in the air breaks. I´ve dropped this at festivals all over europe and it goes down a storm. When I first heard an mp3 of it I thought it was a remix of krust: warhead - same daunting intro, but this mask character knows how to lay it down. ST General is mellow and listenable, but ultimately a bit boring. Chuck the other record out the window, a la Derek & Clive "you´ve gawn and bort this record, ´aven´t you, c*nt?!" ´cause it´s dreadful.
Pieter K - Everything All The Time - 23-Jun-03 11:26 AM
Nice 3 pack, mellow, melancholic, complex and well-crafted. At times a bit laboured and tedious, but this is more then made up for by the potential that this guy has to become the new, techier, bukem.
Congo Natty - Original Sess / Yes Selector - 23-Jun-03 11:21 AM
The original is actually by John Holt "John Holt write police inna helicopter, I man do a dub...", a track from his 1983 Greensleeves album of the same name. This remix is pure class, leaves you aching for a rewind, and is short enough to leave you scrambling to mix it. So do as a congo natty dj should, and just use one turntable.
