Colin Dale's* - Outer Limits²
Aug 12, 2008
I lost a load of my CDs some time ago, of which this was one. I recently found another copy on Discogs, and have just listened to it for the first time in years. Colin is a DJ I've played alongside numerous times and I have the utmost respect for him, but I have no idea what he was doing in the middle of this CD! I reckon he must've wandered off for a pint or something! It's all going quite nicely, then there is just no attempt made at all to mix Midnight Express, Enter the Dragon, Greengirl, Losing Control or Clear with each other - it's more like a true compilation at this point than a mix CD. The weird thing is that they are all fantastic records and Colin is an excellent DJ so he could quite easily have mixed them, I'm sure. Oh well, we all have/had off days, or maybe he really did wander off for an ale for 20 minutes, leaving the studio runner in charge of the mix?! Still, there are some great tracks on here regardless, so well worth a listen...
Jeff Mills - Live At The Liquid Room - Tokyo
Nov 19, 2007
This is a difficult one! It's an absolutely amazing mix, full of raw energy and classic techno tracks, as other reviewers on here have mentioned. And Jeff Mills is an absolute hero to me, as a DJ and a producer. As a Lost regular over the years he has regularly astounded me with his sets and his UR, Axis and Purpose Maker releases will never leave my collection...
BUT...I've heard quite a few DJ's over the years play with just as much passion mixing tracks (and not necessarily their own either!) at just the same rate, some playing on 3 decks too, while still managing to keep their beats in time! There are quite a few DJ's out there capable of hip-hop style cut & paste mixing with techno at speed who don't get the recognition that they deserve, with Jeff always hailed as the master of that particular medium. He is one of the best, but not the be all and end all... I guess what I'm saying is that this is a brilliant example of what Jeff can do, but don't ignore others out there who can do it just as well (perhaps with a few less clip-clopping beats as well!), but are not always so well recognised for it...
Millsart - Mecca EP
Oct 11, 2007
I'm not going to comment on the rest of the EP, because I've barely ever played any of the tracks, but Step To Enchantment (Stringent) is my favourite techno track of all time. I own three copies of this EP just for that track alone, although one is barely playable now, I've played it so much! It's nothing fancy, just absolute raw techno power. The kick, the bassline, the hats, the break - everything sums up exactly what good quality techno music should be, hard and uncompromising but great for the dancefloor. The reaction I've had when playing this out has never altered - pandemonium, hands in the air, screaming!! Get two copies of it going doubled up with the beats going in and out of time and add a well placed scratch or two and watch what happens! This record is pure genius. If you are a lover of techno music and don't own this record you need to find a copy NOW!!!
George Morel - Morel's Grooves 4
Oct 04, 2007
Let's Groove is one of my all time favourite house tracks. It's so simple (just a groove really, as the title suggests) but stunningly effective. I first heard it being played by one of the DJ's at The Mud Club, Philip Salon's night at Bagleys. I spent weeks wandering round record shops in London humming it at confused looking shop assistants until someone clocked what it was and sold me a copy. I've been playing it out everywhere for over 10 years and it never fails to get people moving and smiling. Absolute classic! | ||||
