John Acquaviva - Skills - 22-Jan-06 06:18 AM
I recently dug out a copy of John Acquaviva presenting Skills, and realized fairly quickly why it was that it had a inch thick of dust on it! So what Skills are these exactly?? John Acquaviva’s mixing is appalling to say the least, not to mention the over modulated recording, who on earth let this person near the decks perhaps he was doing the hoovering at the time, theres more fluff on this set of records than the floor. That said there are some nice tunes on this mixed cd, beginning with the intro by Fingers Inc. which is a classic and Salt City Orchestras - I Write The Book (Hard Back Dub) is great as is Cevin Fishers - The Freaks Come Out. In short, with the exception of 2 tracks at over 8 minutes! the rest sit at a little over 4 per track, its hardly worth the listen. It’s hard to know how this cd ever made it to the shop’s, it’s even harder to listen to. All in all a pretty bad choice of tunes to mix really.
Physics - The Most Beautiful Boy In Brazil EP - 21-Jan-06 10:43 AM
At 11 minutes long and released in 2002 this was primed to destroy the summer season of every year ahead, and for me still does. Flowing stings light watery keyboards a saxophone, piano and an analogue synth take you on a percussive groove and a journey you would never want to end, take off begins the moment you drop the needle on the record at the front of this splendid tune. Its Brazilesque, Groovy latin rhythm make the hairs on arms stand up! Several remixes are now available, but the original is still best.
Phunk Investigation - Be Good - 24-Aug-05 11:06 AM
Some soulful vocals from David Randolph for this release on INK Records. Phunk Investigations Be Good has some dreamy beatz and qwerky robotic samples (Side A) from the Jonzun Crew and Space Is The Place (1983) which works well in this deep house mix. Thumping bass lines and repetitive rhythms make this track a worthy winner and proves once again that good tunes will stand the test of time.
Monoceros - When I Was A Child I Wanted To Be An Astronaut - 24-Mar-05 12:39 PM
I first listened to the Monoceros - "When I Was A Child I Wanted To Be An Astronaut" album a few weeks ago and have not put it down since, spaced out downtempo glitch beatz are the buzz word for this special offering from Joan. Throught this electronic album there is a very clever use of rhythm and samples none of which is recognizable or familiar. Its new, fresh and ultimatly unique sound leaves you inspired and happy. My favorite track for this album is the last track “The Astronaut” fitting really since it’s like the aural equivalent of a giant orgasam.
Love it!
