Luke Fair - Balance 011 - 18-Feb-09 05:01 AM
I am a huge fan of the entire Balance series, and this is one of the best, most soulful releases of all of them!

CD1 starts with a extremely chilled spaced out, vocoded vibe and rapidly transitions to seriously funky at track 4. The deep, moody, yet extremely funky Hypnos track is phenomenal. Track 8 is truly a "highlight" with its melancholy guitar strings and brooding vocals which segue into the absolutely beautiful strings of Julien Jabre’s “War.” There is an amazing transition between track 10 and 11 into Kinka’s “Burnin, ”a deep, dubby, latin-influenced house track that takes the entire mix in a different direction. From track 12 onwards, the CD progresses into extremely soulful funky house music with strong latin and jazz influence. Lots of horns weave in and out, culminating in the absolutely awesome “Getaway” by Nightriders. This track sounds like something you would hear on a dancefloor at the hottest club in Manhattan on the hottest night of the year! Tom Novy’s track gradually brings us back down to earth as the CD closes. CD1 is the better of the two mixes. Luke Fair selects tracks with a remarkable amount of diversity and manages to mix them into something highly cohesive that imparts a phenomenal vibe.

CD2 starts with an old school house kind of vibe, cutting straight into a deep, yet driving, rhythm, gradually moving into an old funky and spacey Francois K track from 1998. The mix quickly picks up into a driving progressive workout. Highlights include Dusk and Prayed’s “Playing with Fire”, with its extremely funky beat, Elektrochemie LK’s “Lay Here” with really awesome, almost Italodisco-sounding, synths. The Tiger Stripes mix of Zouin rapidly drives the sound darker while “DJs in a Row” brings the mix back into a party time vibe, with a really effective breakdown. The mixing on this CD is quite dynamic and changes fairly drastically several times, always perfectly keyed. The mix comes to an excellent upbeat close with the piano chords and strings of “Curious.”

ADULT. - Anxiety Always - 27-Jan-09 06:37 AM
I really wish a non-vocal version of this album had been released. The synth programming and selection is absolutely fantastic on this, but the vocals do not work. Kuperus sounds like she is desperately trying to imitate X "Los Angeles"-era Exene Cervenka, but without the desperation, gloom, and intense emotion delivered by Exenes vocal style.

The electronics however are amazing. As one other commentator stated, they definitely project an awesome, harsh, 1980s punk rock/new wave sound with a modern twist.

I would strongly recommend Xs "Los Angeles" LP to anyone that really likes this album.

Dubfire - Global Underground GU31: Taipei - 23-Jan-09 05:31 AM
Absolutely phenomenal progressive house mix from Dubfire. CD1 is the better of the two which, after a gradual start kicks into the incredibly warm and deep "Myself" by BBQ. The mix continues to deepen, and almost has an "underwater" feel, until the Silicone Soul remix of "Finest Dream", at which point the incoming bassline drives the mix into serious energy mode. The strings in this track are incredible! The subdued electro of Booka Shade merges into the vocals of "Im a Hustler" by SMD, switching gears again. "Remember Me" then changes direction again, taking things deep and blue! The following tracks continue to lift up the listener to the perfect degree, culminating in a great Carl Craig remix of Kill 100. Throughout the mix, the bass sounds incredible, giving the listener the illusion of being inside a smoky, cavernous night club.

Disc 2 starts out harder, and is dominated by deep pounding bass. Particular highlights are Us acid-influenced "Sax Track", Dubfires remix of "Float Away", the insanely dark and twisted Huntemann/Bodzin dub of Depeche Modes "Everything Counts", and Alexander Kowalskis "Start Chasing", with its massive breakdown.

All in all, one of the best GU CDs.

Liquid Crystal - Chromatic EP - 06-Oct-08 04:23 PM
I cant believe that this release has not been commented on yet!!!

One of the greatest hardcore records ever released! Some of the most uplifting synth lines and vocals ever pressed to vinyl!!! Can be a bit stresfull to mix into into a live setting but is well worth the extra effort!

The high pitched vocals and increasingly manic beats are absolutely subliminal on this release (and I wouldnt say that for many!)! One of the most representative, although most under-appreciated and under-rated, cuts of the era!

Worth any price!!!!

DJ's Friction & Spice* - You Make Me Feel So Good - 23-Sep-08 03:51 PM
As heard on the legendary DJ John Kelleys Funkydesertbreaks 2, this track absolutely epitomizes the late 1990s desert rave scene of California! Some incredibly deep and meaningful breaks, thrown down across a scorching house beat with acid influence... This music is meant to be listened to with a full moon on the horizon as the beat controls your body! Or as the desert sun rises and the cars start to migrate home! Can still blow a dance floor off its hinges today! A+++ record and amazingly ethereal!!!!
