i've been writing music since i was 12 - at first, mainly r&b but i became really interested in club music in the early to mid 90's. living in san diego, ca at the time, i was fortunate to be exposed to a number of different styles of music that the local r&b, 'spanglish,' and dance-oriented crossover stations would play and always had a part time job at one record store or another...

i started mixing as early as high school but didn't mix 'professionally' until about six years ago. given that i have yet to figure out how to read music (well fast enough to read it and play it at the same time, anyway) i guess it was sort of inevitable i'd end up finding my way up in the mixing booth sooner or later. i generally mix trance, house, freestyle, breakbeat & some euro, although i try not to limit myself to any one style... my first love, though, is anything with a seriously funky, gospel-flavoured groove to it.

oh yeah - and most importantly, i believe that one should never take themselves too seriously... that's why i'll always call myself a [d.j.] instead of "D.J." ... it gives me room to grow -- and keeps my head in check!!

Therese - 04-Apr-07 06:19 AM
Thereses reinvention of herself a la Madonna (but sans the media hype) seems to be finally paying off, at least here in the States... while she hasnt had her nation-wide breakthrough hit in the US yet, her single "Time" finally saw a major label release in the US at the beginning of 2005 and it got considerable play on the gay circuit scene. Folowing "Time," each successive release Therese has appeared on whether as a featured artist or one of her own, has gained consistent airplay on the circuit and in clubs, gaining her a considerable quasi-underground following. It will be interesting to see how her career develops, especially given her new following and her signing to Positiva, the latter of which has the big label clout to get her on the airwaves but enough of the clubworld respect to get her onto the decks as well.

Saint Etienne - Action - 14-Feb-07 07:35 AM
This vinyl is worth it just for the retro-kitsch cover art alone but whats really surprising is that theres a mix of the song here that actually matches the feel of the cover art - and no its not Mr. Verwests mix - its the Laub mix on the flip. The pair have taken the song and transformed it from the standard Etienne sound or standard remix thereof into a breakbeat-electro-tech house hybrid that has the punch (no pun intended) of the great up-tempo James Bond themes like "Live And Let Die" or "A View To A Kill" complete with an almost retro-orchestral feel of earlier 007 themes like "We Have All The Time In The World" or "You Only Live Twice" ... and with a good dose of Ms. Basseys vocal prowess thrown in for good measure --- and this is practically a dub!

A definite unexpected gem being overshadowed by bigger names. And theres that cool cover art to boot, too...

Layo & Bushwacka! - Dr. Teeth - 30-Oct-06 10:28 AM
If youre going to even thinking about touching anything that either Louis or Ella recorded to give it a go-around in the clubs nowadays you better be good... but to try and revamp the two of them on one of the quintessential duets of this century or last? You better be damn good. L took a BIG risk touching the untouchable but pulled it off by avoiding the obvious sample, loop, repeat path and simply updated the musical accompaniment to give it a
current downtempo club sound that maintains the earthy groove of the original. The only samples used are from the original, mostly samples of Armstrongs trumpet wizardry, and the samples are used as accents, not the hook - Layo & Bushwacka manage to pull off updating "Day" for the club without leaving behind the purists in the wake. A career highlight for all parties involved.

Luther Vandross - Shine (Freemasons Remixes) - 01-Oct-06 03:05 PM
What could have been another "soul-less" attempt by industry piers and execs to cash in on Vandross passing away is actually one of the most understated and classy posthumous releases made by a recording artist in years. The surprise here is not in Vandross vocals, which never seemed to waiver on anything hes done, regardless of its commercial success, but in how flawlessly two industry giants styles - those of producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and of the remix/production team Freemasons (Russell Small & James Wiltshire) - combine to give Luther a final farewell that reminds you not only of how much he epitomized style and class but shows you how much Jam & Lewis and Small & Wiltshire can as well.

Vesta* - Special - 18-Jul-06 11:05 PM
Think Martha Wash can belt it out?

Loleatta Holloway has lungs?

Chaka Khans got soul?

Yeah, they all do ... but take one listen to Vesta as she starts class over a bass-heavy, strings soaked orchestral intro and then rips into track nine - "Do Ya" - and you may think twice about any of the aforementioned divas abilities... or at least long enough to wish VH-1 sauntered over to BET a few times to round up some real divas like Vesta to take on the likes of ... Celine Dion?

Somehow I cant imagine Celine being able to pull off "Do Ya" or other finger lickin funk nuggets like "The Rib Joint" ... and that ones really just a segue. Chaka Khan could do this and so can Vesta... and not many others can. Required listening for anyone majoring in funk or soul...
