Still disappointing...

I have just received my copy today, over two years after your complaint. Unfortunately, I hadn't read your review before ordering.

Well, if there have ever been intentions for repressing the CD with improved quality (given the history of Cherry Red a lot of people will seriously doubt that), I haven't received the new version with acceptable quality.
For quite a long time, Kremer's version was my favourite recording of the Sibelius concerto. When I first heard Gitlis with it, I was absolutely blown away, which only happens once in a couple of years with violin recordings, because >30 years of listening have made me very hard to impress. I own a couple of recordings of this and have heard even more. This is my absolute favourite, in my oppinion even superior to Oistrach and Julian Sitkovetsky. One of my top picks amongst the many violin recordings I have In my collection.

Gitlis narrative qualities match perfectly with the requirements of this rhapsodic masterpiece. Even more than Kremer, Gitlis is known to be unafraid of harsh tones to tell his story, which is definitely not appreciated by everyone (if you want it nice and sweet, turn to Perlman - technically perfect, bot almost boring and already outdated in its' approach) but is perfectly fitting for the strange and at times rough beauty of the music.

By the way: The Bartok is also fantastic - as all of Gitlis recordings of 20th century music I have heard.
