Clock DVA - Buried Dreams - 11-Jun-09 07:30 PM
A warning to people searching out the 1998 remaster from Nextera [Catalog#: ERA 9815-2]: it is horribly compressed and audibly clips, totally unacceptable remastering by any standards. Beyond that the usual suspects crop up such as a flat presentation etc., but the clipping is what makes it unlistenable. Very disappointing. Seeing as this disc is currently going from some pretty hefty prices, I thought it best to warn potential buyers--- btw if you're looking for the exclusive bonus track, you can find it readily available on the "Sound Mirror" CD single.

Inkliing - Inkliing - 15-Oct-08 04:12 PM
Digital debut for Inkliing, beatheads take notice, this is late-night, downtempo, moody, instrumental hip-hop/electronic of the highest order. This one is going to get a LOT of play over here. Heavy construction took place following some choice sampling, reminds me of Rehash's sublime sound, straight buttery beats. Epic stuff for a guy who's always had a soft spot for smooth dusty beats and a bit of sampling genius, just loving this release. Can't wait to see what else is a-brewing...

Appleblim And Peverelist - Soundboy's Ashes Get Hacked Up And Spat Out In Disgust EP - 05-Jul-08 04:21 PM
Man, does it get any better than this?! Appleblim and Perverelist need to work together more often, they've managed to perfectly wed dubstep and super-deep dubby techno into two tracks that outshine the individual output of both artists and reach well beyond the confines of the genres that make them up.

The atmosphere is ever present here, invoking mental images of huge wide open spaces, layered with perfectly sculpted bass throbs and massive echoes while maintaining a dark minimalistic sound throughout. With utmost attention having been paid to the smallest details, each echo seems to have been given its own lease on life, unique in character and personality, giving an almost organic feel the the tracks which run near 9 minutes apiece. While "Circling" on the A-side is somewhat faster and darker with an infectious danceable break underlying, "Over Here" on the flip slows it down a bit and evolves a 'Basic Channel'-esque sound with long drawn-out (and tripped-out) harmonic horn layers, the whole of which sounds almost orchestrated in its razor sharp and highly precise delivery. The smokers and home listeners out there will love it.

I think one of the things that stand out the most on this release is the sheer restraint involved, there's no impulse to floor you with insane over-layered bass or intense breaks right from the get-go and very little pandering to any genre specific sound. This love child stands on it's own: it is what it is and it's god-damned good at it. One of the top releases of the year in my books.

Scott Matelic - Ring Finger - 19-Sep-07 07:12 AM
This is one of my favorites 7 inches, IMO the best release on the Bully imprint thus far and that's saying something in the world of instrumental hip-hop. Both tracks are spot on, the sound is akin to the best stuff DJ Shadow was putting out at his peak around the mid-90s --- but I don't want to drag this down with comparisons, it really is top notch in its own right. If you like old Shadow and the Bully sound in general, do yourself a favor and seek this one out.
