Disjecta - Clean Pit And Lid - 05-Jan-06 07:26 AM
I'm very much into Clifford's work with Seefeel, but need to admit his solo efforts are not even half as good as former group's material. Seefeel was alienation, darkness and sadness multiplied by incredible density, music with feelings, not neccesarily the pleasant ones, but that's what dark ambient should be, and that's what lacks in Disjecta's "Clean Pit...". Musicwise this album is very simple, repetitive distorted lo-fi sounds and melodies, all stripped of any excitement; seefeelish, skeletal construction is just a barely noticeable trace. The only track that clearly stands out and reason why I didn't rate the whole thing 1 is "Is That Really It" which reminds me somehow of Autechre's "Vletremx21" in its beatless parts. Rest bores to death.
Renegade Soundwave - Biting My Nails - 05-Jan-06 05:45 AM
I first heard "Biting My Nails" on some rubbish Mute compilation with lineup chosen completely by chance, I guess, and I fell in love with it instantly; then just grabbed the ep and the sound of RSW sucked me in. Title track is very good representation of what RSW are about: the sleaziest fun(k) in dance music. Bassdrum pumping from speakers straight to your head, cool guitar riffs and that high-pitched sound in background which is absolutely insane. Next up - 2 monsters, even heavier than "Nails", both equally great: slow-paced, dubby "Cocaine Sex" with characteristic Thunder's bassline ; and "Kray Twins" sounding nearly industrial. Crazy ep.
Ulrich Schnauss - A Strangely Isolated Place - 09-Mar-05 10:02 AM
Monday Paracetamol is a damn fine track, so delicate and soothing, everytime i listen to it I feel shivers on my back. When it grabs in its arms it won't just let go. Joyous and uplifting melodies are the core of this beautiful record, which is the first Schnauss' release i had contact with and I'm very pleased to know that electronic music still has its freshness.
Prodigy, The - No Good (Start The Dance) - 04-Mar-05 02:25 PM
I rated it 5 only for the first, original version. A masterpiece of beat programming, flawless tune and the groove making it one of absolutely timeless dance anthems of all time. As for the mixes - CJ Bolland's "techno-ish" version doesn't stand out and "Bad For You" is probably the crappiest Prods' mix ever.
Prodigy, The - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned - 20-Dec-04 04:15 AM
GREAT , GREAT . G R E A T !!! All you people expecting Fat Of The Land 2 got smacked in face :-))) Personally I hate FOTL, I'm definitely not into that whole period of prodigy's evolution and after the release of FOTL I was deeply disappointed with the direction Liam & co took. 7 long years of silence and finally the bomb was dropped, AONO was a damn nice surprise for me though having heard Liam's pre-release statements (after which my notion of the album was quite clear I thought...). What did I get? quality programing, quality skull-crushing beats, quality melodies, guests who did their best (except mr gallagher's wheezing) and NO KEITH's 'SINGING', which always freaks me out. I'm also glad there's no hype around prodigy like it was after FOTL, Jilted Generation was the one for Liam to "take his work back underground" - AONO did it 4real. Certainly I'm aware nothing EVER will beat the Jilted Generation or get close to it's perfection but nevertheless prod's comeback album is really great one and far better than all the s**t around with the sticker "alternative music" on it. My album of the year.
