Steve Reich - Music For 18 Musicians May 04, 2005 (edited over 4 years ago)
It's quite a shame that the music doesn't fit on one side of the record. The piece is composed by combining musical loops, performed by 18 musicians on acoustical instruments. The way these loops interact results in a deeply mesmerizing soundscape. Having to turn the record in the middle of the performance may be quite annoying. My advice would be to get it on cd.

Due to the nature of the composition the piece may be of particular interest to those who are into deep loopy techno.
Tisch-tennis smashes the floor! Funky synth lines, nice percussion drive and a supercool sax solo. Works very well in an electrofunk context. But it's definitely not the only gemm on that album :-)
Kirk Degiorgio shows a highly developed view on music on this mix cd, making connections that go beyond bpm or style barriers. This does not only make sure it's an exciting musical journey, but it also gives you some great suggestions for broadening your horizon if you're familiar with only some of the stuff on this cd. Recommended!
I wouldn't call the mod killer track a blip at all. It has a rocky groove, that could've been a bit more easily grooving, more funky, but then I should say that I arrived at this music coming from a techno/ house/ electro perspective. The sample is just really funny. But most of all there are some really atmospheric orchestral sounds that make a cool combination with the beats and that sample, and it's really nice to listen closely what happens there.
a perfect song to make your non-electronic-loving friends understand what the music is about.. it's all there: the groove is ongoing, the sounds are beautiful and electronic, really matching and complementing eachother... the melodies are touching and really make a groove... there's a catchy riff in the middle and the end of the track, only for a couple of bars... it is as if they're teasing you by not going on with the riff, but it makes you want to listen to the track over and over again, and everytime I listen it's the cream on the pie. FANTASTIC :-)
LFO - Advance Jan 22, 2004
A really superb album. This is the best I've heard from lfo. I like it way more than the 'freak' stuff they release nowadays (2003). The album has a unique atmosphere that I find hard to describe, it's something outta space, a real trip. But it's not only listening pleasure, there are some really slamming dancefloor tracks on it as well. Also the album as a whole is quite enjoyable in the way the tracks follow and complement eachother. If I would ever have to get rid of all my records apart from one this is probably the one I'd keep...
I really love the minimal sound and the maximum effect out of the synths by using them as instruments. Like the way the bassline evolves in the A1 track (when we used to). The B1 (rugburn) has a strikingly beautiful melody and a really groovy subbass (which ofcourse is also in the beats version). The dan curtin remix is less intimimately grooving, more slamming than the 3 other tracks. But the sounds are in the same region as the other 3 tracks. Great ep.
The track I like most on this ep I think is sabotage, it's one of my favourite techno records. It starts with a beat that sounds simple at first but when you listen close it appears to be pretty subtle. Slowly the track builds a little while the listener tries to find all the substituens of the beat he hears. The phrasing is a bit different than your regular 4x4x4. Just when you think you heard all the sounds in the rhytm and feel like 'why is this phrasing so odd?' a melody comes in that brings it all together, the phrasing all of a sudden seems logical and the melody sounds like it's changing all the time even though it's just as looped as the rest of the record ;-) Really beatiful track, I'm grateful to the man for making this piece!
