Jimpster - Martian Arts
Nov 04, 2002
Just not a good album. Suffers from a lot of the sampling thought and technique of the time. A lot of dumb, long played out voice samples which wear quite thin in just a few listens. Jimpster has not yet found his voice with this album. There are a few pieces like "Playtime" in which he is beginning to see he's got much more vision and talent than the average "sampladelic producer". For incredible Jimpster stuff check out the PERENNIAL PLEASURES 12" on Kudos.

Squarepusher - Conumber E:P

Good stuff to have on vinyl if you can find it. All tracks were later stripped of their titles and compiled along with other early Spymania works in the Warp re-issue of sorts, BURNINGN'N TREE (which added three unreleased cuts too). Not a ton of melody but enough to keep listening to all drums and sounds. Not a lot (if any?) live bass playing on this album.
Squarepusher - Port Rhombus EP

Along with FEED ME WEIRD THINGS this EP is an excellent introduction to early Squarepusher. The programming work here is fantastic and the melodic content (which Jenkinson purposefully now ignores) is what makes Squarepusher so bloody brilliant. Pick up the vinyl in purple if possible. All tracks were later compiled onto the US release of BIG LOADA (Nothing/Warp US).
Squarepusher - Squarepusher Plays...

Well he did a few other albums for spymania and worm interface before this one. obviously "squarepusher theme" is from FEED ME WEIRD THINGS which is on Warp. The two tracks on the B-side were never released on CD except on a Japanese import of FEED ME. Other names which he went under prior to this record: Duke of Herringay and (wow) Tom Jenkinson. The Jenkinson 12" on Worm Interface is worth seeking out. As is the Dragon Disc (which I don't have!). Man, this stuff is so much better than what he's drudging out now... | ||||
