Reviews & Discussion:

13th Floor Elevators - Live Mar 10, 2012 (edited 2 months ago)
At their peak, the Elevators were a thrilling live act. Keen to capitalise on this, International Artists wanted to get a live album from them. They set up a gig to be recorded, but things didn't go according to plan (as was often the case with the Elevators) and a satisfactory recording was not captured.

Keen to go ahead with a 'live' release anyway, International Artists cobbled together various studio out-takes and demo recordings and then overdubbed some totally inappropriate crowd noise from a boxing match! And here it is...

While some of the recordings here are pretty good, the crowd noise really does detract significantly from the listening experience.
Mandrill - Fencewalk Sep 15, 2011
Both the instrumentals on here are actually re-edits of the original vocal tracks and not (as I was hoping) actual instrumental versions from the original multi-track recordings.
Davy DMX - One For The Treble / Davy's Scratch Aug 28, 2011 (edited 9 months ago)
The Ol' Skool Flava pressing of 'One for the treble' is shorter than the original 12", as it fades out early.
'Na na hey hey...' is a little too sickly sweet for me, BUT it has a massively fat drum break which makes it well worth picking up!
The A-side is good 60's pop, but the B-side is the real shocker, being a super fat funk-rock jam with drum breaks galore.
All about the b-side of this one, 'Chinese Chicken' is an uptempo funk rock track with a fat drum break, and then the super-funky clavinet comes in. Prime material for b-boying, this track is featured on one of the Ultimate breaks & beats compilations on Street Beat Records.

With regard to repressings, as I recall, releases 003, 004, 005 & 006 all got a 2nd limited pressing in 2006.
Hollis Crew - It's The Beat Nov 25, 2009 (edited about 1 year ago)
The MC's on this release are NOT Run-DMC, although Run and Jam Master Jay did co-produce this release. The MC's names are Butter Love and Cool T, as the lyrics confirm - "It's Butter Love! Cool T! So now you know! It's the beat!" (Source for this information - the book 'Raising Hell' by Ronin Ro)
Various - Ultimate Breaks & Beats May 11, 2004 (edited about 1 year ago)
Unfortunately, the compilers decided to edit the Winstons track. It plays at the correct speed, but then is slowed down in the break (from about 127 bpm to about 108 bpm). While this is okay if you only want to beat juggle the break, if you want a copy of 'Amen brother' to play in it's entirety then look elsewhere.
The 'instrumental' version of "Feelin' It" is not actually entirely instrumental, as it contains a verse from T.R.Love which does not appear on the main vocal mix.
