Reviews & Discussion: Raw, energetic, clever. Reminds me of my first time listening to Daft Punk's Homework. Clearly a major influence on this production duo's work. At times they pull out the guitar and it has an LCD Soundsystem feel to it. Recommended.
Worst thing about this CD is that there was never a follow up(!!!). Unfortunately, Global Underground got hold of the boys and well, the rest is history. This was and still is in my book the best mix they ever put out. It was a culmination of all the best elements of their sound and style up until that point. The moment from when Loudeast "Lights Out" enters the mix until the end of CD2 is just pure class! I became a James Holden fan 3 years ago when I purchased this CD. His vision is unbelievable and his brilliance and putting it all together in one glorious mix is evident on this Balance compilation. CD1 is absolutely one of my 'essential' mixes when people ask me for suggestions. I have not run across many others that can "speak" the way this one does. Holden continues to stretch his sound and vision into unchartered territory if you have continued to follow him. He is a talent. A must have for anyone looking for something extraordinary. As mentioned previously, this CD does capture James Holden's ever-changing sound and vision. I especially like CD2 which just has an edge to it from start to finish. I went to his last gig in Chicago half expecting this type of sound from him, only to have him take me down another altogether different avenue of sound. He never ceases to amaze! His track selection is always very clever and his ability to blend tracks I wouldn't dare put in the same 70 minute mix is unthinkable at times. James is never one to disappoint, but rather open up a new perspective. | ||||
