Reviews & Discussion:
I think The Gasman offers us a refreshing take on the early (UK)Rave scene, as well as some classic jungle breaks. Tracks as 'Creampie' and 'Digital Din' are truly outstanding in my opinion. They combine fast programmed, shifted jungle beats, with some beautiful and insane melody on top of it. Very suitable to play on your parties, or just at home at full volume. This album simply offers you a 21st century view on some quality electronic music from the past decade.
It's indeed a shame Marc Leclair didn't release this gorgeous vinyl under his regular Akufen alias. Maybe he just wanted to keep his best productions for a small audience. He certainly achieved it by reversing all text on the record, I do know Akufen for 2 years now, but discovered this one only recently. I think these tracks can compared best by the Quebec Nightclub 12", released under the Akufen alias. It has been recorded around 2001 as well and is very suitable for dancefloors too.
Andy Jenkinson pays a marvelous tribute to the UK's early nineties jungle and hardcore scene with this 12". The A-side is filled with a wicked jungle track. Especially the part at 3:31 is awesome, when he mashes one of the best amens I've ever heard with some Amiga sound. Later on the track develops into a raggacore track (think Shitmat) and ends with a mad voice sample. The B-side contains the pure madness of Acid Varsity Speciale. The first part of the track reminds me of Kid606 powermac g4 stuff, while the last part contains some harsh hardcore beats (think Mescalinum United). Add some TB-303 noises, and you got a monster of a track.
This record spreads the typical Wobblyhead sound very well. The music has been composed very organic, with some real instruments like guitars and drums, and there has been poored an electronic 'Casino Versus Japan-ish' sound over it. Some people might say there isn't enough variation within the separate numbers, but I think they don't listen well enough. For me, most tracks bring me in a trance, and transport me into a world of beautiful fantasy. You've got to give this records some time, and then you'll experience the 'Sweet heavenly angel of death'.
I don't agree the Choci and Mickey Finn mixes are stand-out tracks. The only thing they're doing is mashing up the original in a very strange way, I can't imagine someone could dance to this beats or enjoy listening them. Perhaps this release doesn't offer high quality Afx, but it's worth buying for the title track. The Caustic Window bassline mixed with the pacman sounds (Richard is a arcadefreak as you know) works pretty good. Recommended for Old School sets or just to remember the good old days.
