Kaskade - Bring The Night - 06-Apr-08 06:28 PM
Sometimes I think of mix discs as a snapshot into how the DJ is feeling at that particular time of his/her life. My guess is that Ryan Raddon here was feeling pretty good while making this comp, which is, for me, one of the best compilations in recent memory. Pretty smooth, seamless mixing with just enough variety to keep the listened audially (is that a word?) entertained. Yeah, the Dirty South mix of "Sorry" was already ubiquitous when this was released - still sounds great to me. But kudos for using the Classic Mix of "I Found U" that not many people may realize exists. Of course Kaskade's own mixes and productions here, especially of Nelly Furtado and his Roan offshoot, show a lot of creativity here. The addition of the Martin Brothers and Milton Jackson tracks also proved to be a nice curveball. And that Dave Spoon mix of "Big Fun"? Why is this not a major global hit? Plus, I love the font that's used on the sleeve - it's so unique, much like this release. People willing to try something different from their usual cup of tea should take a sip of this Jolt-cola-sized mix. Kaskade has proven he has the chops behind the decks as well as behind the boards.

A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory - 09-Oct-07 08:37 PM
If someone were to come up with a hip-hop time capsule that could store the best material of all time and bury it underground for another to uncover in 50 years' time, there is no question that this CD would be an automatic entry, along with Run-DMC's laceless Adidas shoes and Eric B's gold rope chains. With just their second release, ATCQ cemented their place in history. Jazzy samples underpining some of the best lyrics and tracks ever produced - and each Tribe member coming into their own (perhaps Phife with the biggest improvement, even getting his own track, "Butter"). From the opening lick of "Excursions" to the last chorus of "Scenario", all of it is sheer genius. The saying is true: they don't make 'em like this anymore. Want more proof? Look at VH1's 2007 Hip Hop Honors ceremony; guess which nominee everyone wanted to see finally get respect.

Kaskade - Love Mysterious - 04-Oct-07 11:31 AM
For his first album with Ultra, Ryan decided to try and construct actual songs with a wide array of textures that could connect with a lot more people than just the club kids. Well, he succeeded, by and large, with this disc, producing five singles and showing off his many influences. He saved the lengthy club jams for the extended mixes to put on the 12" releases. To me, each track is special in its own way. Personally, though, "Be Still", "The X", and especially "Never Ending" are the big tracks indicative of his mood while writing this album. By the way, the track order on my version of this CD is different than what's shown here. Mine goes like this: "Stars Align", "All You", "Be Still", "Distance", "The X", "Fake", "Sometimes", "In This Life", "Sorry", "Never Ending", and "4am". Welcome to the bigs, Ry.

Taylor Dayne - Say A Prayer - 26-Sep-07 02:17 PM
Looking on the surface of this mid '90s track, one would guess that these are your typical mainstream house mixes indicative of the time. And one may have a point, considering the V & L mixes can get grating after repeated listening. However, to my knowledge, this is one of only a few avenues where you can get the Mass Dub of "Say A Prayer". This is perhaps one of Mr. Morales' best dubs ever, which is a very deep, minor-key, work-it-to-the-bone rhythm arrangement of a track that he surprisingly did not try to copy; but the keyboard licks at the end are straight from Tenaglia's "Look Ahead". Didn't Satoshi do both? Anyway, this maxi-single is worth seeking out for this one particular mix. And, oh yeah, Taylor's vocals are still pretty powerful.

Garbage - You Look So Fine - 25-Sep-07 07:16 PM
"You Look So Fine" may not have made much buzz when it was first released - I think this was the last single off of 'Version 2.0". However, the Eric Kupper remix featured here is, in my opinion, an underrated classic. Indicative of the style he had employed back in the mid-late '90s, he treats Shirley's vocals with a lot of respect and class, adding just enough moody keyboard textures to perhaps appease those Garbage fans, while the overall production screams out "Early in the set! This ain't fast enough!" (AKA a mainstream delight). I care not; I love this mix. Fans of Garbage who were upset that this was not included in the recently released retrospective should seek this and purchase it.
