Boys Town Gang - Cruisin' The Streets - 25-Aug-05 02:10 PM
A pretty good and bloody long disco thang. More importantly, however, this is officially known as the Gayest Record Ever, with a breakdown in the middle thatll make even the least faint-hearted blush.

Essential? You betcha.

Force Inc. Music Works - 11-Dec-04 01:35 AM
Achim Szepanski is your friend.

When you set up the German version of R, it will inevitably be a bit "different"; musically, this Frankfurt conglomerate would embrace both the über-functional and the most nonsensical brown acid excursions, spread out on its half-dozen sublabels that were active at any given time; and accompanying every release, a postmodern rave theory rambling that redefined the art of the press release - even the blandest tech house record would be packed with an indecipherable thinkpiece. How could you not love them?

So to sum up briefly - "this is a label where its total chaos whats being released" [Mike Ink]; seminal acid works (Heckmann & co), brief "Breakcore" period when breakcore was just a German version of UK ardkore (92ish) and weirdness, greatness and some Köner on Mille Plateuax - later, Chi-house revivalism in the Relief era, then a lot of glitch (the jurys still out, but some occasional goodies, yo), minimal techno, a dnb sublabel, a couple of somewhat stylishly lifeless microhouse sublabels, and that pointless unit Ritornell, and an infinite amount of other muzicks. Yes, the Force releases things that make you go "Pheeew..." - reinvention at all costs, but everyone cant specialize.

Stamina, too - refuses to die even after the EFA incident. Thats customer service.

Matmos - 08-Nov-04 01:21 AM
Laptoptronica gone art installation; self-obsessiveness cleverly camouflaged as social commentary, draped in a velvet cape of Ironic Chic whether its intended or not (the 90s cant be unlearned, seemingly) - against all odds, some of it is listenable, but most of it is plain average. So do we need them? Does Björk? Does humour belong in musick? Whatever the answers, a novelty group is a novelty group is a novelty group. Matmos are clever, but contrived. Will be vaguely remembered as one of the many "mainstream fringe" phenomenas that made the supposedly controversial appear decidedly uninvolving.

Mental Overdrive - Unplugged - 03-Nov-04 11:31 PM
The ultimate soundtrack for the postmodern existence, "Unplugged" is as soothing as it gets. Every track is lush and relaxing and conveys atmospheres rarely heard in electronic music. And altough the approach is minimalistic, the dynamics make for an excellent listening experience throughout. Definitely Mental Overdrives best album.
