Metro Area - Metro Area 4 - 19-Nov-09 09:26 AM
Cant believe this record has no reviews! I will take on the difficult task of going first. This EP still stands up as the best Metro Area release on Environ, against some pretty stiff competition. And although the two tracks on the flip are classic boogie/Italo influenced work-outs, its all about Miura. Sleazy, sexy robodisco with that heartbeat bassline and distinctive vocal, this slayed everybody when it came out - and still does nearly a decade later. A totally unique masterpiece and it has still never been bettered by the MA boys. Steer well clear of the 2007 re-edit (that Morgan and Darshan werent too fond of either) at all costs, this is one track that doesnt need one.

For anyone with just a passing interest in cosmic music, Balearic, Italo, sleazy soundtracks and West Coast rock I urge you to hunt down this CD. This is an unbelievable, under-rated journey from Joel Martin and so influential that DJ Harvey played one of the tracks (Laid Back) straight off this CD on the infinitely more well known live in San Diego mix. And if the music wasnt good enough, Joel gets busy on the mixing board with the effects to add to the spacey mood. It has to be ranked alongside Mark Sevens Slow Blow as one of the best cosmic mixes ever in my opinion. Essential.

Visual - The Music Got Me - 14-May-09 04:38 AM
Way ahead of its time in 1983 and a certified Prelude classic. A dream team of Timmy Regisford, Boyd Jarvis and Tony Humphries combined to make this, one of the earliest examples of house music put on wax. Regisford and Jarvis followed this with other classics like Chocolette on Supertronics, Level 3 on Fleetwood and their remix of Tony Cooks On The Floor but this one is my favourite. Part of the vocals were sampled in 1991 by Masters at Work for the equally amazing Our Mute Horn.

Lola - Wax The Van - 14-May-09 04:18 AM
Another stellar Arthur Russell production, this time from the fag end of the 1980s. Featuring engineer Bob Blanks wife Lola with the cutesy, totally out-there vocals, this is a typically leftfield piece of work from Russell on the tiny Jump Street label. Its been called proto-house, and it is, but its really got all the influences of underground dance music at that time. All mixes are essential, but Jons Dub probably steals it with its nice piano riff towards the end. The mystery for me, though: who is Jon??

Loose Ends - Hangin' On A String (Contemplating) - 05-Dec-08 08:27 AM
DJs from the 80s are probably sick of this record. To some, it probably sums up that era and could even be dismissed by others as wine-bar music to play next to Your Love Is King. To me, this is unbeatable and one of the few records to always stay in my constantly rearranged Top 5 of all-time list. Its been played to death and the video still makes me cringe but its a total killer. How such a dark and unconventional arrangement of a tune could make it so big in the pop charts is almost amusing. Nick Martinelli, together with David Todd, was responsible for some of the best boogie/disco remixes of the early 80s but this is him on a solo trip displaying how much of a deep talent he was/is. Make mine a Snakebite please, barman.
