Plastikman - Closer - 11-Oct-07 02:53 AM
I love what Richie Hawtin does. I love Plastikman. I love what he does. The music on this record is as great as most or more of what he's done before, but the lame kidnapper vocal stuff he does over some of the tracks is just fucking corny and it ruins it. This record pulls out a lot of the areas that Consumed was going toward, and even further, but the cheesy vocal effect he does just completely takes away from it.
Regina Spektor - 07-Jun-07 04:43 AM
Every 5 to 10 years or so an artist or band comes along who just totally blows me away. In the past, Radiohead, The White Stripes, and Neutral Milk Hotel have done this. Most recently, Regina Spektor has done this. Her voice and unique way of singing, her sometimes soft, sometimes powerful, sometimes frenetic piano playing, and her imaginative lyrics create interesting characters and stories all of which come together to make some of the loveliest and amazing music I have heard in a long time. REginaSPEKTor!
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea - 02-Mar-07 03:22 AM
I love introducing people to Neutral Milk Hotel and especially this album. Upon first being introduced to this album almost ten years ago, for the first six weeks afterward it was the only thing I listened to. I was immediately taken by the amazing instrumentation, the beautifully surreal lyrics, and especially Jeff Mangum's voice. People say that he can't sing because his voice is nasally, but to those people I only have two words to say: Bob Dylan. This is hands down my favorite record of all time by anyone, and, in my opinion, along with Nirvana's 'Nevermind' and Radiohead's 'OK Computer' is one of the best albums of the '90's. I can't even put into words how much I love and recommend this album. I have so much hope that Jeff Mangum will put out another Neutral Milk Hotel album.
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Volume II - 01-Mar-07 08:24 PM
One of the more mature releases by Richard D. James, this is one of my favorites to listen to. It shows that as extreme, harsh, and brutal some of Aphex Twin's music can be, he can also do incredibly subtle and beautifully haunting music as well. This is much more ambient than "SAW 85-92" which had more beats. This album is virtually beatless. Since first hearing this album and especially "Rhubarb" (disc 1, track 3) I've been saying that I want it played at my funeral. That track is one of the most beautifully sad songs I've ever heard. As it gives me chills and makes my chest feel empty, it also makes me envision floating in the clouds in the afterlife. I read somewhere that Richard D. James said he got the ideas for these songs in lucid dreams. If that is to be believed, for RDJ is notorious for and seems to take pleasure in giving false and/or misleading information, I'd sure like to have dreams like those. A great album to drift off to sleep to. Very, very highly recommended.
Tards, The (2) - Rubber Room - 28-Feb-07 10:50 AM
Two truly hilarious cuts from some truly twisted minds. The A side finds Adam Parfrey singing like Elmer Fudd. The B side is a song about (I think) the son of a proctology nurse who was born in a public bathroom that features a glory hole, sung to the tune of "House of the Rising Sun". Upon first purchasing this, I felt I had paid a bit much for just a 7", but once seeing that it had colored and marbled vinyl and was an edition of only 500, I felt a lot better. I'd highly recommend this to any fans of Mr. Parfrey or Boyd Rice.
