Roc - Night Fold Around Me - 14-Aug-08 04:32 AM
Somewhere out there in the vastness of space, there exists an alternate universe where ROC's "Night Fold Around Me" was 2006 Album Of The Year in every end-of-year poll in every magazine going. It's not this universe, because people are idiots, so this ended up selling about nine copies. This is a really beautiful album, full of phenomenally good songs, and you can probably find it in a Zavvi bargain bin for £2 or something if you play your cards right.

Manitoba - If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport - 14-Aug-08 04:28 AM
A one-off vinyl single by The Artist Latterly Known As Caribou, nothing like the Up In Flames album which came out around the same time; much more uptempo, throwaway techno stuff. It's alright, certainly, quite good fun, not earth-shattering but nice to drop into a set now and again - until you play it at 33 by mistake, when it becomes a massive thudding 60bpm monster, and *entirely brilliant*. One of the best records played at the wrong speed I've ever heard.

FortDax - Folly - 29-Apr-03 05:32 PM
"Folly" gets my vote for most beautiful record released this year... it's an often-mesmerising mix of lush, deep textures, weird loops and pretty sampled melodies all put through the wringer. It sounds gorgeous; at times you worry it might be about to veer a little close to "chill out album" blandness, but there's a real sense of taut minimalism behind this which keeps it from ever getting too glossy or overdone. The preceding album "At Bracken" was released on Static Caravan which should tell you all you need to know; SC alumni moving to bigger labels usually come up with the goods (think Sybarite) and this is the best of the crop so far.

Grace Period, The - Mod Killer - 14-Mar-03 07:46 AM
Pretty uniquely for a Static Caravan single (in my opinion anyhow), the B-side here is somewhat better than the A-side and certainly *much* more smooth and listenable for DJ purposes. The A-side isn't actually bad or anything, it's quite fun really with all the mods-and-rockers samples, but among all the other amazing Static Caravan stuff that's come out recently this to me is kind of a blip.

Schneider TM - Frogtoise - 09-Feb-03 04:55 PM
The lead track on this 12" single (the Vredus mix) is considerably different to, and better than, the version of "Frogtoise" which can be found on the Zoomer album. The textures are much more interesting, there's more of a tune and it just generally grabs the listener so much more than the dreary LP cut. Anyone who loved his cover of "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" but felt disappointed by Zoomer's relatively flat feel will love this to bits. Recommended.
