Boy Robot - Rotten Cocktails - 12-Nov-05 03:36 PM
This CD was my first exposure to this extraordinary duo. These two are clearly like "penut butter and chocolote" - very good together through a combination of styles.

This release starts off with a banging low-freq beat underneath light electro synth melodies. This color of music embodies the IDM ethic with its syncopated, half-measure beats and breaks.

There exists good variety of tracks in this release as well: Some tracks have crunchy, hard edged beats, others have smoother 4/4 structures with markedly techhouse overtones, while still others execute glitchy and more purely electronic sounds all while maintaining an emotional, warm feel.

Like Plaid's Not for Threes release, this album maintains a wonderful balance between aggressive-leaning percussive elements and soft, hooking melodies that fill out each song. Asymetric rythms against human narratives help create a new, but familiar brand of intelligent listening music. An excellent release that is in my top 5 favorites for 2005.

Pixies - Surfer Rosa - 09-Nov-05 10:37 PM
This release was my introduction to the Pixies. Together with Doolittle, it reflects the epitome of the attitude and skillful songwriting of the band at its peak.
Starting out with the big-beat Bone Machine, we get the classic Black Francis holler, the off-kilter harmonies between Kim and Frank, and the not-too-serious rock the Pixies created.
The album flows throughout very consistently (the most consistent Pixies release, imo) and the driving basslines and drums offset Joe's signature lead guitar sounds that gave the Pixies its defining sound. Fast, somewhat eclectic Latin influences, and clever lyrical content make this my favorite Pixies album.

Talking Heads - Remain In Light - 04-Feb-05 02:17 AM
One of, if not the best overall album the Heads put out in their high quality body of work. Marked funk overtones, brilliant driving, often heavy, beats on many of the songs, and infections sycopations just force your head to take note. The talent of Brian Eno's song production is evident throughout this album - this man and this group were a very good matchup.
