Autechre - LP5 - 13-Sep-09 12:37 PM
Sonic perfection, nothing less. This is most probably the best Autechre album in terms of balance - theres enough "musicality" to counteract the complexity of some of the rhythms and sounds. Its more than a decade old now but still sounds very fresh. The sound design across the album is brilliant, from the first few notes and sharp rhythms of Acroyear2 to the warm ambience of Drane2

Whack the speed up to 45 RPM and youve got another killer album as well as the original at 33.

Human League, The - Reproduction - 15-Sep-08 01:38 PM
Please note that the original vinyl version of "The Path Of Least Resistance" is quite different to the version released on the remastered CDs. The vocals in the second verse are not distorted as on the remaster, but instead were originally treated with tape echo. The original starts with both the bass synth and lead synth in the intro and there was originally much more reverb in the general mix too. You can quietly hear someone in the studio just before the intro as well, though quite what he is saying Im not sure.

Talking Heads - The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads - 07-Aug-07 12:36 AM
Forget The Best Of, if youre really looking for an introduction to the work of Talking Heads go for this brilliant double disc live compilation. It covers all of their best work, including the whole of the Remain In Light tour set list with the amazing Adrian Belew on guitar. Some of the versions of songs here are better than the original album versions. Born Under Punches is given a brilliant smooth and slick intro with some great bass work from Tina Weymouth extending the whole track to over eight minutes. The only small problem I have with the album is the way the tracks have been split as any song introductions are usually put at the end of the track beforehand, which is misleading if youre only listening to seperate tracks, but this is no problem if youre listening to the album in its entirety, which really everyone should. Out of all the Talking Heads albums, this is the one I listen to most.

Mordant Music - Dead Air - 11-Mar-07 02:19 PM
I found Mordant Music through a link from a forum to their Myspace page. The extracts their got me intrigued, and I lined it up to buy from Boomkat. Now I have it, its a very interesting release. The packaging is excellent (yet can be troublesome if youre playing it in the car, etc.) and I was looking forward to listening to it.
Mordant Music present Dead Air as a string of broadcasts introduced by Philip Elsmore, an ex-TV announcer for various regional channels. This gives the release a strange, almost fake somehow, feel to it. The tracks themselves cover a wide range of genres, but I feel that the better ones on here are too short, and the more boring tracks are too long. Also, having twenty tracks on the album does seem to be too much. I find the middle of the album (which sounds very much like The Orb) a little boring with only Philip Elsmores voice backed by some synth experiments. However, the start and end of the CD are excellent. Fallen Faces is definitely the best track on here, but if you think that the album is going to consist of the powerful synth-pop of that track, then dont go for this, but buy the 7" picture disc instead.
This is a good album in my opinion, but I do feel that parts should have been cut out, and others extended. Buy it if you want something that will change from IDM to electro to synth pop to grime.

Metamatics - 3 Jak And Dive + Nildro Hain EP - 14-Jan-07 10:53 PM
This for me is a good varied album. Just ripping this to my computer I found myself giving the tracks different genres like IDM, electro, acid, glitch, trip hop and chill out. The sound reminds me of early Royksopp, but just a bit more glitchy, which is great.
One of the reasons I bought it is for the John Foxx track, Free Robot. What this is is a rework of She Robot (or She Robot is a rework of Free Robot, whatever came first). Metamatics has turned it into a completely different track, with the distorted vocals hidden behind a mass of soft ascending alarms and shuffling beats. Its a really good track, but if youre buying the CD just for the John Foxx track, I suggest you listen to the CD before buying it.
