Lene Lovich - Flex - 18-Apr-08 07:09 AM
I'm not a fan and I can't say this album has improved with age; even for Stiff, Lene was on the leftfield but hang on; what's that familiar intro? It's another brave/mad/inspired choice to cover the 1972 Northern Soul classic by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, 'The Night'; perhaps this was the version Jamie Reynolds loved? It's the only track on here I'll listen to again; worst of the lot is 'Joan' (I never want to here that again).
Klaxons - It's Not Over Yet - 12-Jan-08 06:38 AM
Did you listen to the b-side? Brave/mad/inspired choice to cover the 1972 Northern Soul classic by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Did Jamie Reynolds buy a cassette of it from the Q8 garage in Purewell in his youth? Hated it on first hearing (too much like The Stranglers when they started doing covers) but stick with it and look out for the original version in charity shops. 100% whistleable. Side note, the Q8 shrine is no more, redevelopment due very soon.
Dr. Bob Jones - 18-Jun-07 08:06 PM
2007 marks the 40th year anniversary of Dr Bob Jones' involvement in the music industry sticking with his original policy of playing the "highest quality black music, featuring soul, dance and jazz". Bob started as a DJ in May of 1967 and has been with us ever since either via radio, TV, books, magazines, compilationsa, the odd remix and of course live gigs.
Fingertwister - I Remember Jah - 15-Nov-06 09:20 AM
Fingertwister (great name) has a reputation for downtempo dub and ‘I Remember Jah’ can only enhance that reputation. Not sure about the Sparky the Piano EFX (ask your grand parents) on the vocals, but this is a great electronic reggae. Ras Iyah supplies the “Rastafariiiiiiiii“ roots chant and there’s some Fat Freddy's Drop type sax playing. I was hoping the remixes tidied up the vocal and sure enough, Ooze goes King Tubby echo chamber on us with some tape loop stuff. Sushi Club (Tomio Tremmel and Naoki Kenji) take us back to Balearic chill out beaches, glorious sunsets and sunrises. Downtempo dubbed electronic house couldn’t describe this one better; no doubt bound for a compilation release. The Solead remix has lost most of the original track for Depeche Mode style scratchin’ with some vibraphone; you can see why Damian Lazarus is a fan of their work. Strong 12” as each track brings something different.
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Moanin' - 17-Jul-06 04:36 AM
Art Blakey's most successful album contained the title track by Bobby Timmons along with Benny Golson's 'Along Came Betty" and Gilles Peterson's favourite, 'Blues March'. This trio of tunes proved to be so popular and timeless, Blakey played them almost every night for the next 30 years.
