Automatic Tasty - Sine Language - 21-Apr-09 02:07 AM
A delicate collection (EP) of Lo-fi, charming, naive (?) Electronica, more paying tribute to than ripping off the lighter moments of Richard. D. James Album period Aphex Twin (an all to brief part of his back-catalogue). Isolated sections remind me of Brothomstates Claro in terms of slow (almost sad) melodic arrangements. A good listen after being battered by the latest slab of Merzbow! Short and sweet and no complaints, it was a free download too..

Klaus Schulze - Blackdance - 14-Apr-09 06:37 AM
Twenty years passed between my last listen to this album on vinyl and the reissue here; I always regarded this album as the poor relation to Timewind, and found the strange raspberry headed figure in the artwork strangely unsettling.
Time passes, tastes change (not too radically it seems) and here I am with a copy, and its so much better than I remember, almost like I was too impatient or immature to fully appreciate it first time. The bonus tracks really work well with the original material, the music forms and dissipates slowly, yet is still engaging. Classic early German electronica, and recommended to anyone who like to sit and listen to music...

Killing Joke - Extremities, Dirt And Various Repressed Emotions - 20-Feb-09 09:01 AM
Recovering from the commercial freefall created by the awfully sketchy Outside The Gate did not start with this album, but at least the band was reforged with Martin Atkins on drums giving the group back a pulsating, dangerous edge. This release did nothing really but make ears bleed and neighbours complain. The tracks are diamond hard and as heavy as anything theyve ever done before or after. Geordies riffs and chords are frighteningly good, the lyrics are socially, politically charged and and (sometimes) subtle. If you want HEAVIOSITY you will find it here, the production isnt great but kind of adds to the overall murky feel of the album. The bludgeoning effect of the band on tracks such as Intravenous and Slipstream belie the craft of the songs. Titanic!

Vangelis - The City - 20-Feb-09 08:04 AM
Unfortunately even the greats have their off days. This is one of those days for Vangelis. A musical evocation of a day in the life of a City has the makings of a good idea. Istanbul, Athens, Mumbai? Er its hard to tell, the City is as anonymous as the music, generic and a bit flat. When things go up-tempo the melodies are well within the scope of this mans talent and the production is bland, the tracks segue in an uninteresting fashion and (worst of all) Vangelis never strays far from the presets on his synths. Why do I own this album? For tracks 5, 6 and 8, which despite all my gripes are lovely. Twilight could have made it onto El Greco, its that good.

8m² Stereo - Tacet - 19-Feb-09 11:55 PM
Sometimes its not so much the content of music as the craft in putting music together that makes a release worth listening to repeatedly. Tacet is rather difficult to categorize (or whistle while you work) but the shifting textures and palate make this a quite rewarding listen.
Some tracks remind me of the quieter moments of Enos Before And After Science, there are elements of Tangerine Dreams Zeit and David Toops work springs to mind. Above all though, I found this release fresh and interesting, maybe the time differences between source material recordings used accounts for this.
