Reviews & Discussion:
Wow, this record is fantastic.... The B-side totally triptastic acid bliss. A wet/drippy lucid and colourful collage of electronic synth action, washes over a buzzy sounding 303, making my mouth water like a wet dream. I spent a few minutes the other day arguing with my housemate, because he refused to believe that it was a 'bionic orange' tune. I must admit that it a bit different from 'bionic orange's' usual sound, and not at all 'ear bleeding'. It's almost delicate, which isn't a term I've ever used to describe an acid techno tune... yea man, really good tune. It's a few years old now, but it doesn't sound dated or cheesy, which is a real testament to the producers.
Two absolute top quality tunes from 'Charlie don't surf' on his awesome Acid-techno label. This is the penultimate Havok tune, and never made it to full release. Only 10 copies ever pressed, and distributed to a very select few DJ's and one very luck ebayer. The B-side is a powerful and driving/grinding little number, and suprisingly hard. I never would have guessed it was a havok. Very good tune with clear and nicely pollished production, and a rock solid groove.
But the A-side is the real GEM. Top tune,,in fact a REALLY top tune but I won't tease you by trying to explain just how great this tune is.'cus that would be cruel.. You'll just have to get a copy and have a listen for yourself. Oh yea, sorry, I forgot ......only 10 copies in exsistance, and I'll not be selling mine.........................;-)
Embarrisingly CHEESY female vocals completely ruin this tune for me. I know that there is a long history for 'gay' sounding female vocals in electronic music, and sometimes (VERY rarely), it sounds alright in acid techno, but not this time. I'd always liked to think that SUF were above this blatant marketing ploy, but apparently not. I know that cheesy girly vocals tend to sell more records, but is it worth the damage it does to the labels reputation? I don't think so, it's not even funny! A very dull and predictable effort which completely lacks any originality, or soul. And whatever coolness there was in this tune is totally ruined by such aweful sampling. Very poor show SUF. I'll be putting this tune right at the bottom of my pile along with 'purple heart', NEVER to be seen again.
All that said, this is only an opinion. Maybe many people amongst the acid scene like this soul-less one dimensional audio rubbish, and in which case go out and buy it. In fact go out and buy 2 copies and make the producers rich, just to prove me wrong...........
It is a shame that the ratings only go up to 5, as this record is a 6 at least.........Soul Mantra is a dark synthy number, with a great sample, and a really nice flow to it. Black star is a classic piece of formula acid techno, with super lush 303's and lovely analog drums. My copy of this tune is almost paper thin, not sure if it makes any difference to the sound quality, but I prefer fat chunky heavy vinyl. Soul mantra is also available on 'cassiopia records' with slightly better production quality, and an alternative mix, although you don't get Black star on that one. Yea man, classic acid techno that still has all of it's original charm.
Superb release from christian trance duo 'Sourmash'. A deliciously emotional, dark, lucid and divine tune, delivering heavenly analog synth sounds over a pulsy bassline. An absolute genre crossing classic. I've heard this tune played amongst the hardest of acid techno club nights, hippey psy-trance parties and the traditional English wet free party's. It has a couple of production flaws, such as small change in tempo, and the drums loose sync very slightly a couple of times, but only a very alert DJ would ever notice. It's one of the faults with Analog (pre midi) technology, although personally I think it adds to the charm and character, as does the fact that it's a single sided vinyl. Sourmash didn't seem to make a great deal of tunes, but the ones they did were generally top quality.
Featured in the movie BLADE. This is a really dirty little nugget of blood-drenched acid techno, just the way I like it. A long tune, minimal and hypnotic with a massive breakdown/build up, a great bit of distorted 303 action and top quality (heavily vocoded) vocals from New Order. Play on a gig soundsystem at high volume and high speed for maximum effect. Not suitable for vegetarians.
Bazooka is an absolute 'belter'.... Completely 'avin' it 303's, and a right 'ravey' sounding Juno grab you by the gonads and kick you mercilessly into a high speed whirlwind of excessively intense analog Acid Techno. If this wasn't such a well put together tune, then I'd have thought that DDR was 'taking the pi*s' (making a joke) out of Acid Techno,,,,,,,,,,,yeah man,,,,,,,,,a powerful tune with a distinctive sound. Bazooka is a perfect title for this track, by the time you've realised whats happening, its too late.....'Gotcha'
lot's of spinbacks/rev kiks, and a flavorsome few bars of 'ravey'/old skool sounding breakbeat at the beginning and end of the tune make it really easy to mix. This tune may make your eyes twitch, your gums bleed, or your stomach contents jump out. Just a friendly warning from someone who knows. At the very least you will defiantly know that you've just listened to it... Nice work Hazchem.
'King of comedy' is a great record with the samples from the legendary and now sadly deceased 'BILL HICKS' ("drugs have done great things......"), taken from one his live shows. . It also has a really nice cheeky synth sound going most of the way through, and a slightly trancy 303 meaning that it mixes nicely with trance and (acid)techno tunes. I am suprised at the low ratings for this tune,, as it really is a classic,, even just for the sample. Thanks Bill Hicks,, you will be missed. | ||||
