Young Lay - Black 'N Dangerous - 31-May-07 12:42 AM
To me this is the definitive YBB Records album even when Illegal Business? or Forever Hustlin are almost equally as dope this was the first one that I heard and I didnt know shh about bay gangsta rap back then so hearing this started the snowball effect. :) Not to lessen Fergs contributions, its how Khayrees flawless production work fits with Lays smooth rapping style on this one that makes Black N Dangerous a straight up 5/5 classic. Khayree has always been in the top three of my favorite producers from the yay area and this album is his crown jewel. He has created many different vibes that give each track its own feel, there are tracks for the swangers and bangers, the hustlers and of course the buddah lovers, still having the album sound coherent. Keeping the beats organic and playing many if not all of the instruments himself he is the true definition of a producer. Young Lay flows effortlessly to all of the beats with lyrics that keep you grinning and the few guest rappers each give out their best. Too bad all that crazy stuff had to happen to him after the album was released. How many hits can a guy take with him getting first shot in the head, after that stabbed repeatedly, with in the meantime his baby kidnapped and girfriend killed by his psycho ex and now him serving 12 years.
Pistol - Rolling In My '64 - 25-May-07 01:53 PM
Both sides are really nice on this single. A-side has a more mellow track with summer just cruisin feel to it while on the flip theres a bomb dope dealer story with damn nice beat and a great vocal sample. The b-side is not really the original version of Whos In Charge but the Psycho Tomato remix, its named incorrectly on the cover.
Scarface (3) Featuring Tupac* And Master P - Homies & Thuggs - 11-May-07 09:03 PM
How terrible can the original version be? I guess the main reason why Scarface sucked for a moment was terrible beat choices like that. Too bad they didnt clean Mr. Millers usual moans and unghhhs away when they remixed it because the remix beat is really nice, I just cant stand anything Master P has done after 1997. :)
20-2-Life - Up 4 Parole - 02-May-07 11:27 PM
If I had to pick my all time favorite Houston album, this one would be a top contender for that spot. Even when Black and Killa Hoe aint the best rappers alive, their styles work together smoothly and I always find myself grinning to their grim and at the same time funny lyrics about selling drugs and the consequences of the dopegame. Especially "After Servin A Deuce" is a classic story about coming back to the streets after couple of years in the slammer. Also the last track which is the best SPC posse cut in my books is lyrically sick as usual with K-Rino dropping the insane line about a rhyme that was so dope it wrote itself.. :) And the beats, what more can I say but perfection from start to finish. Lots of great samples and all around that good old gangsta feel with the whistles and whines. Even the most clubbiest track "Da Muzik" gets pulled off with style and damn I like the way they flipped the "Look Of Love" sample on "Road 2 No Return". Too bad theres no telling who produced which track. I dont know how good 20-2-Lifes newer albums are but this one is an album every southern gangsta rap fan should own.
Various - Waikka Wäkisin - 20-Nov-06 03:57 PM
SLTs first vinyl release, this has been long awaited for and doesnt disappoint. Production is top notch all the way with those classic gangsta sounds, almost every track is a stand out one. Especially worth mentioning is the 15 minutes long posse cut "Waikka Wäkisin Posse" made in the best S.P.C. style introducing Mike Oldfield gangstafied, that coupled with some of the best Finnish gangsta rhymes Ive heard = dopeness. The only thing to complain about is not including the anthem "Kauluspaitoja" on this wax, that track is a classic.
