KLF, The - Chill Out Sep 10, 2004 (edited over 5 years ago)
This really is something a bit different -- more like a sound collage -- drifting through pastoral settings (with the ghosted voice of Elvis hovering over steel guitar). One of the better albums of this genre -- relaxing and dreamy. It reminds me somewhat of Thomas Koner's work, yet more upbeat. A very good late night album.
In-Grid - Rendez-vous Sep 10, 2004 (edited over 5 years ago)
It's interesting that In-Grid is Italian yet chooses to sing in French. The song "Tu es foutu" sounds like your proto-typcial French pop song, with the accordian (!!!) playing an upfront role. Undeniably catchy -- every time I play this album around other people, everyone wants to know who it is and where can they get it(I had to import it from Germany to Canada -- it just wasn't available anywhere else). It's pure Euro Dance Pop and it's a lot of fun. Whether it holds up in five years, is anyone's guess but for now, I think the accordian is kinda cool.
Alizée - Gourmandises Oct 15, 2003
This is breezy french pop by Mylene Farmer's protoge -- it sounds remarkably like the elder Libertine. At it's best when it's pure dance pop - sure the international hit, Moi Lolita will get a lot of attention but there's plenty else to like here as well.
I absolutely loved this album. Former Zoviet France member moves in the opposite direction of Robin Storey's Rapoon in favour of more sonically simple, minimalistic electronics that take their time to develop. This music demands to be heard -- sure it's quiet and might be classified as ambient, but there's more going on here. This is not passive music by any stretch of the imagination. This may not even be music by most definitions. I come back to this one time and time again.
Noosphere - Aqua Oct 15, 2003
I was quite surprised how much this CD grew on me. I thought there was a good variety of sounds and tempos including some nice acoustic touches. It reminded me of Leftism (not necessary in style) but in the attempt to break away from the monotony of so many electronc recordings.
