Thomas P. Heckmann - The Lost Tales Vol I - 25-May-08 07:20 PM
I picked this disc up, knowing the name. For me, Thomas P. Heckmann stands out from the early 90's and throughout that decade. A lot of classic acid tracks.
This album presents with minimal styled beats paving way to a mix of not so typical Heckman acidic beats and slow moving electronic melodies. Quiet ambient tones change to dance oriented IDM and hypnotic waves of full on melodic grooviness. Each track title fits the sonic journey, and slowly builds the ambience to a soft low key beat oriented climax. The last track, "Astral Chains" seems to break out into typical Heckman acid house style not common throughout the album.
Simple, yet sonically more appealing than some of his previous works, however, this is one of those albums that will get lost in the shuffle of Fax Records releases.
Various - Chill Out - 22-Mar-08 10:48 AM
Has a similiar cover to klf's chill out, yet instead of sheep in the fields, there are wolves.
Airlock - Fake OD - A dark minimal drone that slowly creeps into a DJ Spooky sounding drum and bass montage. It is quickly replaced with more ambient drones.
Pomassl - Mipp ppon - Some experimental ambient music highlighted with a revolving speaker to speaker sample. The music quickly becomes a fluster of metallica samples, only to let you off easy.
Aube - Bitten flaw - A high pitched tone radiates into a slowly evolving melody. the track finally closes with minimal dark tribal bliss. This is very reminiscent to Rapoon.
Panacea - Demolition desaster KLF samples galore with noisy gabber psychotic mayhem. Heavy beat samples "extreme terror". Hard hitting and ever evolving ear mashing blissfulness. Pulsating and addicting murdering and marauding music. Lo-fi live panacea with klf samples take over till the end.
Fmvsjl - 971023fmvsjfl01 - Experimental samples converging into an artistic array of abstractions. Noise and drones build to a sudden ending.
DJ Pure - Dekon 3 - More experimental samples. These samples mold into a dark chaotic static and noisy synths. The music is pushed to synth limits, Grinding at your delicate ears. Tt begins to push your sanity further and further away from true reality.
Alois huber - Morose mote - Dark, slow moving demonic ambient with wolves howling. The track is just too short.
I-F - Quest - More upbeat, yet still minimal sounding. Lo-fi dark industrial synths with interesting computer vocals. The lyrics are rather humorous. Do not let the fact that it has vocals deter you. Trust me, you will love them.
Epy - Exp - Experimental drum and bass mixed into a psychedelic noise pattern. A short and simple track that has a lot of talent.
Fennesz - Sportster - The noise begins to immediately spin us into a collage of orange sunshine bliss. Slight drum and bass undertones which never amount to more than a mere sample.
Ryoji Ikeda - Interference 001 - Low bass rumbles become the forefront of a hovering tone. Would this be considered ultra minimal drone? The drone slowly oscillates in you brain. If the room is not completely silent during this track, then you miss the power the track has on your mind.
Otraslab - Hadacol Another ambient drone track. This time it is more alien sounding. It is rather reminiscent of an alien singing. Slow moving, but does have a revolving melody that keeps your interest. The track slowly fades out.
highly recommended.
9x - 9x - 22-Mar-08 10:39 AM
Scape'ish feelings of everyday life, gliding across with some floating timeful ambience. Hypnotic in sound. A nice lengthy sample in track four seemingly felt like it belonged in this track. Track 4 is rather dreary, slowly driting into a spaceless pattern. As simple as the music may sound, there seems to be a lot of layers. It keeps the minds attention, slowly captivating into the hypnotic sounds. Do I even hear some elements of Spacemen 3 in track 5, maybe even a little Rapoonish. The music does become uplifting, (as in track 6) and not always as drifting. Track 7 uses some interesting samples, which again fit perfectly. The music builds around the sample, creating an interesting appeal between a soundscape, ambience and some vox samples. A sense of Delirium sets in and paranoia ensues, grabbing attention and urgency, directing from the voice inside the track. A very nice journey into the mind of Stephen Phillips
Svasti-ayanam - Sanklesa - 22-Mar-08 10:34 AM
Some intense yet mellow chanting built around water samples and environmental tribal like drumming. The music is dark and inviting. There are some interesting layers of ambience strewn through the darkness. We are left with a hypnotic dark environmental recording.
Track two becomes more minimal. The ambience washed away by some dark experimentalscapes. The chanting soon returns, yet it seems to create more of a wave than to stand out as a voice.
Track three begins more as a dark ambient industrial feel. The samples are droney sound rather mechanical in nature. Slowly we are introduced to a few short teaser samples, only to have them end as quickly as they started. Do not get lost in the loop! This track sounds best with the right speakers.
Track four dives into a dark and earthy tone. Tribal drums soon approach and nicely compliment the earth tone. The drums sound environmental on their own. This track is more upbeat than the previous tracks, but still remaining chilled.
Track five continues with the drumming. This is mixed with a clanging loop. The drum's create a dancefloor track.
Track six begins with a drone and some intense samples. The drumming and a female chant ensues. Some of the samples have a reverb quality. The drumming builds us to an another ambient industrial sounding track.
Track seven is a short but nice ambient drumming track.
Track eight and nine are nice tracks. Track nine especially. There seems to be a mood change from track eight to nine. Track eight is darker and more sinister sounding. The pace is of paranoia. It quickly slows down for a breath, only to contiune through its darkness.
Track ten is noisey, with some cut up samples. Probably the most intense track thus far. It demands your ears, your attention and you mind. It's short and has a slow fade out.
Track eleven drifts into dark ambient. This is the darkest track on here. It could easily be on a Raison D'Etre album. nice fade out at the end.
The chanting and drumming are far from that of New Age, which makes this a decent cd. I wouldnt spend a lot to get it, but it is deff worth the listening time.
Heimatærde - Kadavergehorsam - 08-Mar-08 08:47 PM
Energetic German industrial EBM merged with archaic, medieval ambient melodies and interludes. These layers are mixed with your typical dancey industrial beat, however this project is somewhat different sounding. The interludes throughout this album are as strong as the original score tracks. Tracks like "Jerusalem", "Dona nobis pacem" and Verflucht" are original sounding. "Jerusalem" is a combination of Celtic and Middle Eastern melodies with a strong danceable beat of capitivating madness. Some tracks such as "Morituri salutant" and "Die Schlact" are full of pounding beats, never ending and distorted vocals ever forming. The v-coded vocals are difficult to understand at times, and sung in german. There are sporadic medieval vox samples of a knight thrown in for good measure.
Overall, there is a good variety of music and beats per minute presented, and work very well on this album. Kadavergehorsam works because it sounds different than the typical music plaguing the genre.
